The Ignorant Comments Must Cease

I want to thank everyone for stopping by this offseason and visiting the Wizards Insider. There have been a number of interesting discussions about the draft, the trade and free agency and I feel that overall the banter has been healthy and fun. The energy the past few months has been great.

Most of the comments on this blog have been engaging and informative, with a mix of the appropriate trash talk. But in recent weeks, there have been vile and offensive comments that have crossed the line and are unacceptable in this format.

I won't go into detail about what has been said, but I want people here to know that Wizards Insider will not tolerate racially insensitive remarks. This is a forum for intelligent discussion about basketball, the NBA and the Wizards, not a platform to spew hatred toward people of different backgrounds.

To those who have decided that this will be the place to express your ignorance, I want you to know that we have the means to not only remove those comments, but also to remove you from commenting here again.

As I said, most of you guys keep it clean. We are pleased to have you here and we want you to keep on coming back. The people who have crossed the line (you know who you are), just stop it. The Wizards Insider is not the place.

This is supposed to be fun, people. Let's keep it that way. I'll be back with something about basketball in a little bit. But I felt the need to shut down the silliness.

I agree 100 percent Mike, this is special blog you have Mike, and we don't need people on here saying inappropriate comments.

Whoo Hoo!! Please test the removal feature as soon as possible. :)

We all know to which comments you are referring. Good to know you read this stuff.

Thanks for that, Mike, we appreciate your effort.

How about some more rumors on here? I know you hear a bunch of stuff. This free agency period only lasts for so long and you can tell the Wiz faithful are dying for info.

My 2 cents: Oberto.

On the serious tip, please provide any updates into how Gil is doing up in Chicago with Grover when you get the scoop.
As we all know, this team goes as Gil goes.

consistently METAWN. cosistently BEAT ON DEFENSE. cosistently KILLING TEAM MORALE.
AJ doesn't make his teamates better. who has he taken under his wing since gil in GS? IS he helping the youngins or constantly ripping them in the media after games? we evaluate AJ as a team leader b/c we can put #s to some of the things he does well (ppg. rpg. 81 GS etc.) there are a lot of things this team's "veteran leadership" isn't doing that contribute to the wiz losing , the same way the youngins do.

if neither is a superstar then why so much opposition to not having one of them. good role players are hard to come by but AJ gets what 60 mil, just so fans can defend him by saying he's NOT a superstar. He sure gets paid like one.

I've heard quotes from a few of the young guns talking about how Jamison has tried to instill that work ethic in them. You can't MAKE someone want to hit the weights on their own. Until it clicks for the kids, nobody is going to get through to them. Hopefully after last year they wake up and see that talent isn't enough anymore.

Jamison makes $60 million and now so does Varajeo. So what are you saying? He's in the lineup EVERY NIGHT and you know what you're getting 20/10. I'm not opposed to not having anyone but who are you planning to bring in to replace them. Stop complaining with no solutions that's all I'm saying. Let Jamison walk last year and the possiblity of Gil too...then what?

Trade him now to bring in who? What is your suggestion?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | July 9, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

Hey Mike, I was wondering if the Wizards are at all interested in pursuing a D-League player, more specifically a guy like Pops Mensa-Bonsu. He went to George Washington University so he's somewhat of a local. He seems to have a lot of upside and dominated the D-League according to some of the statistics I saw. He would also be a cheap addition to the team. Have you heard much about it?

Posted by: pakimonster | July 9, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

SDMDTSU,
I suggest that we get rid of AJ and start Blatche. We will then get blown out on the boards every night and lose more games this year than last. Then we will be in a position to get a top draft pick.

On second thought, maybe you're right. ;)

Posted by: original_mark | July 9, 2009 2:56 PM | Report abuse

I hear POP's name being mentioned a lot. His stats in Europe look good and he's a legit 6'9" 235 with a 7 foot wingspan.

Posted by: slimbo-Rice | July 9, 2009 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Exactly Mark. Blatche is 22, and ridiculously inconsistent. Jamison is awkward, and plain and defensively he is lacking. It's so much easier to play that grass is greener game? If Jamison came off the books next season, who would they suggest we go get?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | July 9, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

Mike - thanks for your follow up on the offensive comments of recent weeks as it detracts from the Wizards Insider. I was one who found certain comments not only ignorant but prejudiced. Glad to see the WaPo stands behind you and will remove those who pollute the blog with those type of comments.

On a positive note, any additional word from EG about the Wizards possible inviting Pos Mensah-Bonsu to training camp along with other rookies who impress during the summer league? I'd like to see how he fared against our big man and if he'd be able to make our roster. He seems to have some of the skills we could use off the bench.

Posted by: wizfan89 | July 9, 2009 3:04 PM | Report abuse

no one's complaining, just giving an opposing viewpoint. i already said i don't like jamison, so i might trade him for a pack of backwoods and that would be an upgrade to me, but the only reason i really went off talking bout not having jamison was b/c people feel that to keep gil we HAD to keep tawn. i was saying that if gil would turn his nose up at 100 mil for AJ, with no guarantee that he would get to play with him elsewhere, I as a fan wouldn't oppose losing them both (in that situation only).

Right now i can't tell you who was a fa jamison't contract summer so anyone who knows tha available bigs jamison's contract summer chime in pls.

well now that we've got this offensive powerhouse on the perimeter, why not just fill the position with a guy who focuses on rebs blks and def, maybe a leon powe or a young big with a high motor, superstars need not apply.

Posted by: lilhollywood10 | July 9, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Elton Brand was a FA, thats about the only guy I can think of with any talent. For the sake of argument...let's say he comes off the books in 2010. Lots of FA's, who do you go get?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | July 9, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Well Leon Powe? Knee surgery...sound familiar? One thing Jamison does is keeps defenses honest. Someone who cant score at PF will roam to shut down the permieter. Just like people leave Varajeo because he's not a threat to score. Jamison actually does score from the post, as ugly as they may be. So with no post up game from the 4 or very much from the 5....your perimeter game isn't going to do very much. Neither is your pick and roll game. Arenas, Foye, Butler, Powe, Haywood? No thanks.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | July 9, 2009 3:23 PM | Report abuse

The only comparable bigman available last summer to Jamison was Elton Brand who had missed most of the 2007 season with a torn achilles tendon. He subsequently missed most of last year with a dislocated shoulder that required surgery. Philly also is paying him $80+M over 5 years which is a lot more that Jamison's $50 over 4. Renouncing Jamison AND Arenas to sign Brand would not have improved the Wiz.

Say what you want about Jamision, but he's been an iron man who consistently puts up a 20/10. Check his stats against most other 4's and you'll see he is the top 10 in most categeories except blocked shots. His leadership in the lockeroom can't be measured on a team with so many young, impressionable kids. People who want Blatche to start must not have seen him play for the last four years.

Thank you sir. His game may be ugly but it's not many players that you know 82 games for 5 years you're gonna get 20/10 and isnt a clown like Zach Randolph.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | July 9, 2009 3:29 PM | Report abuse

who said blatche should start. leave the strawman alone. powe is a reach i admit, but i don't know that a team full of perimeter shooters can win big with a 4 whose focused only on getting his shots.

and what's this bs that his leadership can't be measured on that team? it was the team thea yall say he was leading. either he was able to get the guys to fall in line or not. Most of the lakers were younger than Kobe, and most of the cavs are older than bron. age meant nothing when it came to them leading their respective teams to championships and conf finals. AJ's leadreship ability is measured in him being able to lead the men on his team. he's supposed to set the standard id Gil's too goofy to be the leader.

with or without brand, last year philly made the playoffs. they'll be a better team this year with him, they were prolly one all star pf away from beating orl this year.

btw i never said let aj and gil go so that we could get brand.

who do you know that played 82 for the past five years? who avg'd 22 and 10 last year? i don't like jamison and some of my reasons may not work for yall but don't just lie (in print) for your man. AJ has only played 1 full season for the wiz. if his 8.9 rebs = 10 rebs for yall cool. He gets these #s in 39 mins with the green light to shoot.
In 24 mins blatche gives you 10 and 7( by the METAWN THEORY OF ADD 2 REBS) . Maybe blatche would give you comparable production with comparable pt. I'm pretty sure he could play better d, or at least at the age of 22 be taught to play better d.

Blatche can get 20 and 10...but then he'll follow it up with 6 games of 7 and 3. Save the Kobe and LeBron talk. Kobe is damn near on an all-star team and LeBron isn't even human.

from what i can gather, there were some pretty outrageous racial epithets being thrown around by one person in particular (stuff that makes you go "wait, people still think like that?")

It's since been removed. So if you still see comments up that you think crossed the line, those weren't the ones M.Lee was talking about.

Which means, unfortunately, we still have to put up with random insults regarding homeless men and used condoms (it seems the sexually active destitute are not a protected class of citizen.)

The Wizards should just wait til the trade deadline to make moves. They will be better positioned to make moves for either a playoff run or the next off-season. There is no need to pay a player for the full season when you could just trade for them to play half a season or so. GO WIZARDS!!!

Why? Sounds like you've already made up your mind that Jamison has to go in order for the Wiz to become a contender.

There's a lot of dissatisfaction with the Wiz' three stars on this blog, one of them for not playing and the other two for not playing well enough. I doubt anybody is on the fence this late in the game.

I think it might be the 'backup QB' syndrome. Whoever is waiting in the wings takes on the characteristics of a savior. Then once they actually get their chance, everybody is surprised to see their flaws. So the praise wheel shifts to the next backup -- and so on and so forth.

Once that trade was made, Blatche was on the hot seat. He's going to get his minutes this season, and he'll have to make the best of them, or they'll likely pull the plug.

McGee has another year. Nick Young, who knows?

McGee and Blatche need to play more. They make this team more athletic. Yes we lost Gil and Haywood last year but we had everyone else. I don't count Stevenson.

Jamison has missed 29 games in his 5 years...he's consistently in the lineup. And the numbers are consistent. youre probably gonna get 20 and 8-10 rebounds. Almost every night and he's gonna probably be in the lineup. Nobody else on the lineup can you say that about. Caron, Gil, injuries. NY shoots 70% for a week...then disappears for two.

Brand had a torn achilles or something the year before...so signing 2 guys coming off major surgery? Not very good business sense. Brand got more coming off a season when was an all-star and put up 20/10 and only 2 other players did that I think. KG and D12...someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Jamison is actually paid quite modestly for what he's done. Is he gonna be old at the end of the contract...yeah but I feel he's earned his money.

When racist bigots like yourself spread their hate, it's the responsibility of others to condemn them and to not sit idly by and let it become accepted. Your comments really have no place on a public board.

Ah, "I know you are, but what am I?" is the best you can do. What, no racist vitriol in response? Not only are you a bigot, but you're not very clever.

And again it's worth pointing out: people such as DC_MAN988 who take pleasure in posting racist comments are cowards who would never have the nerve to pull that s#it in public. You think that you're anonymous online (ask your internet provider if that's true, btw), but you can't keep people from calling you out for the stuff you post, and I realize that annoys you to no end.

"but you're not above the occasional condescending insult or strongarming ridicule."

Pretty funny coming from someone whose only contribution around here recently has been stalking me around taking shots at me without any attempt to talk basketball. I criticize people's points related to basketball, period. You and your boys seem to have a real jones about tossing my name out even when I'm not involved in the discussion (this thread being a case in point). If you want the discussion to be about basketball, you might want to try discussing some instead of clucking your tongue at me. If there is no call, there can be no response.

Just something to think about.

Like most enjoyable things in life, it only takes a few jerks to ruin it for everybody. This board is no exception.

Posted by: akmed0 | July 10, 2009 12:35 AM | Report abuse

This drama is all very amusing. The sad thing is that we are all broken down old men who no longer play basketball. If we did we would be out every night playing hoops instead of sitting on here getting caught up in the soap opera.

It amuses me to no end how upset people get at internet comments. Who cares? I couldn't care less if anyone else agrees with me on this board. That's not to say that I am always correct, or even close to it, but most people on here have very uninformed opinions and its not worth it to get riled up by what they say.

Besides, as men, we all know that personal insults said over the internet would never be said in person. People who behave in that manner are immature, regardless of age.

DC_MAN88: why don't just grow up and be a man and trying fight something you can't. I've seen what you've posted and most of it is negative and just my looking bad as a person. No need to talk the Wiz like that or anyone on that team like. This is our hometown team at least so some type of respect to them. They go out there banged up just to give everyone some vote of confidence and here you are trying to bring it down. We need that negativity nor does this blog.

satchmore: thank you for callig him out even though he had some crappy and pretty lame comebacks.

Mike, great stuff. You are right on!

Stop the personal confrontations - we're adults - clean it up and stop pointing fingers at others. Let's get back to basketball shall we?

By the way, there are some women on here, too :)

Well said Mike. Too many of these online forums breakdown into attempts to express an ideology rather than discussing the issue at hand. How about more insight into how Foye and Arenas will coexist in the same backcourt?

If it was worth going back and looking up, it's likely i have more comments about basketball than i do about you. If you have the time to back up that claim, be my guest. Regardless, I was chiming in to a discussion already in progress.

There are a lot of people who do bring you up and cluck their tongue at every chance, and while i wouldn't include myself in that group, you have. It's unfortunate, but life goes on. I commented on their discussion saying that you make valid and often better arguments than most people, but that you also enjoy being overbearing. I won't use it to distract or take away from what you have to say about basketball.

You're a jerk, but you can get away with it because you're right. You're the Dr. House of the Wizards Insider. And really, I didn't think you cared enough about what people thought to dignify a response, as long as youre right about the basketball. Which I never brought into the question.

I'm shocked--who knew that Mike even read the comments on this blog? But seriously, I don't think DC Man 88 is prejudiced against anybody except Gilbert Arenas, and race has nothing to do with that.

Why don't you MYFB and let Mike do his job, and that's to stick to talking about basketball.

If you can't handle criticism that you consider negative, then hide under your covers and cry yourself to sleep.

No matter what the forum may be you will always have people that go over the top. That does not mean it is acceptable but the fact is you will always have the 10% which can make it bad for every body. Needless to say, the objective of the game of basketball is neither black or white!

Not that it matters, since it is equally distasteful, but making anti-semitic remarks is not making racist comments.

To be so would mean that jewish folks (myself included) were a distinct race. Jewish people are related by faith and heritage. Antisemites have historically tried to foster the canard that jews are a race to prove that the jews were inferior or in a sort of cabal by birth. It just isn't true.

Calling anti-jewish remarks racist belies a subtle racism in itself, as in a thinking that all jews can be categorized together.

Furthermore...not that this is the place for it, but there is no such thing as race period, because race connotes a scientific distinction. Race can not be defined, therefor it can not exist. Saying "i know it when I see it" doesn't cut it.

Ethnicity is a sociological term that describes common heritage, so maybe that is what we were trying to get at here.

Not faulting anyone, just saying...

Can someone explain what this is all about? Is it just kalo_rama's angry comments? Or was there something more?

Michael was referring to some specific posts, but this has been going on for quite some time. And while we want to err on the side of free expression and don't want to have to read all the comments with censorship in mind, it has gotten to the point where Wizards fans say they don't want to read Wizards Insider because of the comments.

After the draft, I saw people posting that on Steinberg's blog, and on other Wizards blogs they say the crew here "is not exactly a MENSA club," and that's when you know the culture here has to change.

When we're actively driving people away instead of drawing them in.

Nobody wants to sit here and scold and be the Post Police, but we've got to all be a little more grown up, because the cumulative effect of the comments aren't as harmless as each individual one, perhaps easily ignored, might seem.

These are clearly worthless "threats."

There are no people being driven away.

This blog has been jam packed with people begging Mike Lee to make more posts.

Postings were ridiculous in numbers during the draft.

Thread topics are filled up with responses as soon as they are posted during this slow the summer with no FA activity with Les BouleS.

The people who are threatening to leave are just a bunch of whiners who continue to read, and probably continue to post, but just with different handles.

The crew at Steinberg's blog and other Wizards blogs are clearly not "mensa club" either, but then again, it's utterly stupid to think that a mensa club member would provide any more value to a basketball discussion especially when it comes to Les BouleS.

Ridiculous overhype and baseless threats.
