Preseason Is Here; Grizzlies (0-0) at Wizards (0-0)

Wizards starters: Gilbert Arenas, Nick Young, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood.

Grizzlies: Mike Conley, O.J. Mayo, Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph

Line: Wizards by 5.

The Wizards have new warm-ups this season, with black and gold playing a more prominent than role than blue. They look pretty smooth.

You already know that Allen Iverson (left hamstring) and Javaris Crittenton (left ankle) are out. Flip Saunders said earlier today that he planned on using Gilbert Arenas for just "8-to-10" minutes against Memphis, but after talking with Arenas, he sight he might give him some more time. "He'd like to go a bit longer," Saunders said. "We'll see how his knee is, if his knee is still warm. If there is time and maybe put him back in, I'll ask him and I'll put him in a little bit more time. We're defintily not going to be in a situation where he's going to play 24 minutes, coming out of the box."

Arenas isn't wearing a knee brace on either leg.

Nick Young is already embracing his role as a starter. When approached by reporters before the game, Young asked if he could do talk afterward.

Fabricio Oberto will play. Saunders was asked before the game about making his debut as Wizards coach. "I hope they aren't going to judge me on the preseason games," he said. "Tonight is a game as a coach, you can't lose. If you play well, and you do the thigns you want them to do, you have positive reinforcement. If they don't play well, you can jump there butts and say, we're not where we think we are and do some things better. You're in a no lose situation."

JaVale McGee addressed the crowd before the game, telling, "It's our time and I hope you guys enjoy it."

Iverson, a native of Hampton, said before the game that he had no choice but to sit out. "I don't see it as being safe or smart. I can't go," Iverson said. "If it was Game 7 of the Finals, I wouldn't be able to go."

I'm here at the game, 55-53 Grizz at the half.
NY started and played well but he may have to come off the bench because the reserves struggled to get going offensively.

Posted by: zxhoya | October 6, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Same starting 5 to begin 2nd half

Posted by: zxhoya | October 6, 2009 8:32 PM | Report abuse

zxhoya replacing Michael Lee with on-site reporting...

Deshawn has been a standout on D.

Chocolate_City,

Cool -- thanks for the radio link.

Rudy Gay is going to have a breakout year I believe, he is giving CB all kinds of trouble! CB struggling today.

Posted by: zxhoya | October 6, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the updates, zxhoya.

Looks like the Griz shot 51% from the field in the first half. Defense aint working yet. And we ARE getting pounded on the boards. sheesh.

Javale McGee and Hasheem Thabeet start 4th quarter.

The Grizz really look polished tonight, they might surprise this year.....and this is without AI.

Posted by: zxhoya | October 6, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Mark, the Wiz are really working on D but Grizz are playing well.

Posted by: zxhoya | October 6, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Sam Young might turn out to be the steal of the draft

Posted by: zxhoya | October 6, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Wiz have missed alot of layups tonight.

Posted by: cannontl | October 6, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mohammed10 | October 6, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Mike Miller is an outstanding rebounder and a great passer.

I don't know what Javale's doing in practice but he looks pretty darn good tonight.

Blatche has also played well - 13 points.

Posted by: cannontl | October 6, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

97-87 Wiz with 37.4 sec left.
Mike M and Randy F are great pick ups.

Foye, Miller, Mcguire, Blatche and McGee in 4th quarter - winning the game.

Posted by: cannontl | October 6, 2009 9:32 PM | Report abuse

101-92 Wizards.

Posted by: JPRS | October 6, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Blatche has played well. His shot was off in the 1st half but he was under control the whole game, no over dribbling on perimeter. I like what I saw from him.

Saunders: "We're defintily not going to be in a situation where he's going to play 24 minutes, coming out of the box."
Arenas' playing time 24:07 Doh!

Posted by: creativefunk | October 6, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Dont believe a thing Saunders says in the media... 8/9 man rotation... gil only playing 8 - 10 minutes... it means nothing... Saunders will say what he thinks is going to happen and how he would like for things to happen but when you step into a new environement with a 12 man roster loaded with talent, injured players coming back healthy... not even Saunders knows how things are going to turn out on a day to day basis... he has to get a feel on what he has and how he is going to use those assets.... he would soon find out that he may want to employ a 8/9 man rotation but by the end of the game he will have used 10 - 12 players with what may look like a 8/9 man rotation but with an additional 2 or 3 players getting some valueable minutes per Situational purposes...

Posted by: DaGuru | October 6, 2009 10:22 PM | Report abuse

Blatche looked good tonight, 13 points, 8 boards...around 20 minutes....I believe the wizards are going to be very good if they can fix the rebounding issue we had tonight. Tooo many free throws missed tonight..but overall...I think that Flip S 8/9 man rotation wont be much of the hype people making it out to be....with all of the talent that these guys have and they play close to the way they played in the second half of tonights game....my thoughts...2-3 seed easy in the East! D-steve also played solid defense as well... Good game boys!

Wizards finally have a complete roster loaded with Talent from 1 - 12... and finally we have a coach (no direspect to Eddie) that will maximize this teams potential offensively and Defensively... but with that said it will be a bumpy pre-season on into the begining of the 1st month of the season... its going to be bit frustratiing cuz your not going to see what you think this team is capable of right away... Saunders has a tough task at hand... but I trust he will get this team rollling in the right direction soon... Wizards have the deepest roster in the NBA and the deepest NBA roster I have seen in years.. albeit very young in the middle of the roster (ie. Foye, Young, and Blatche) and the back end (i.e McGuire and McGee) but all have loged some valueable minutes in thier short careers with ample minutes in a starting roll... nonetheless I haven't seen a team with so much depth and that alone will be a hard task for Saunders to manage combine with getting a feel for who plays well with who, employ def. mind set, etc... Tough job ahead but in Saunders I trust....

Depth in Les BouleS terms means a lot of mediocrity.

So 10 assists for Gil in 20some minutes? Not bad, not bad at all. Maybe he is serious about being the facilitator.

But I sure hope to see him drop a 30+ spot at some point this preseason...hopefully Friday when I'll be there

Posted by: cannontl | October 6, 2009 9:31 PM

I disagree. Blatche still playing as though he's a 6'5" guard. Hovering around three point line on offense. I guess he's allergic to the setting up on the blocks. Also out of position on defense and offense when comes to rebounding. I understand this is only the first game of the season but I still see the same things as previous years. Once, recieved ball near basket and instead of a force dunk, he finger rolls. He's 6'11"!!!!!!

I must say though I was impressed with the number of shots DM was making during warmups. It's obvious he has really worked in the offseason on his mid range shot.

Gil loooked quick and responsive on the knee. Didn't look for his shot much though. Save it for when it counts!

Excited!!!!!!!!

Sorry to see DC_man88 still able to post blogs, after the unacceptable insulting comment he made to someone a few days ago. Does he realize there may be children reading these opinions. I certainly hope he does not have children to raise in his image. The purpose of this blog is to have fun and voice your opinion not to insult people!
