Jamison discusses distractions, trade rumors

Antawn Jamison spoke on Sunday about how difficult the past few weeks have been for the Wizards, with the team in on four-game losing streak and dealing with the latest incident involving Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton.

"It's tough alone trying to win games and get things going in the right direction," he said. "Where we at right now, trying to get out of the doghouse, it's even tougher. To have distractions away from the game of basketball adds to it."

I asked Jamison how he has been dealing with trade rumors, with league-wide speculation that the Wizards are interested in shaking up things with the team underachieving. "I've been around a while, so it goes in one ear and out the other," he said. "I don't think it's affecting this team at all. A lot of guys are hearing [the trade rumors], but what it all boils down it is, it's part of the territory, it's part of the game. So you just got to block it out and go out and play.

"With me, every year, it's something. You just go out there and play the game, but if I have to go somewhere else, that's part of the game," he said. "I have a pretty good relationship with the front office people and they have yet to indicate with me that something different is about to happen. They are being very patient and they want to see this thing turn around, but how long do you wait? And how many chances to do give this core group of guys that you have here? Us as players, we know we're in a difficult situation, but we just got to go out there and play hard and know eventually we'll turn things around."

Gilby the imbecile just doesn't get it:

-------------------------------------------

""It has its bumps and bruises, it has its good times. If I had an angry team, it would be even harder. But since our team is lighthearted, it's easy to come to work every day," said Arenas, who is averaging a team-best 22.7 points and has played all 31 games this season. "I'm playing better than I expected to play. If we was winning games, everybody would be saying I'm having a great year, I'm most improved player.

"But we're not clicking as a team. And because I make the most money on the team, the outside world looks at me, like, 'Oh, I must be the problem,' " Arenas said. "

Arenas has no desire to go elsewhere but said he understands that every struggling team looks to make changes. "I'm just happy to play basketball again. You put me in a city, basketball, hoop, it's the same old thing," Arenas said in a telephone interview. "Whatever city I land in, it's the same thing. It's basketball and you can hang out where you want in the summer. That's up to the fans and the organization. If after all is said and done and they accept me, then it's up to them. If they don't, they don't and I have to move on."

AJ,

It's almost impossible to win games when you refuse to play any “D”, throw up 3 point shots with 14 seconds left on the clock and don’t pass the ball?

In the time honored tradition that is the Washington franchise things have gone about as bad as possible in the shortest amount of time. Wow, I knew before I went on vacation for the holidays that a shakeup was needed with the way they were playing, dissension problems, etc... I hoped we could retool on the fly and find some chemistry with either Butler or Jamison gone. But, alas, it's blow it up and suck for the next three years (at least) time! It's kind of captain obvious to state that there is no player on this roster that you can build around. At best, you got a couple of second fiddles, but in reality more like third fiddles. Hindsight being what it is, I said at the time that signing Arenas to that big contract was a mistake. And, maybe not those posting in the insider, but most people around town were all for keeping Mr. Agent Zero. I decided to hope for the best. No suck luck. You give an immature knucklehead that much money and you are asking for trouble. An immature knucklehead with 3 knee surgeries to boot. For that kind of money, a player should have every intangible under the sun. Arenas was a gym rat and that was about it with the leadership skills of a 5th grader. Ciao!

Kudos. You wrote all those words without calling me a name. Now if we can just get you to stop reading more into what I said than I actually said. I did not write or imply that the NBA had "no dominion" over Jackson's "private conduct" because clearly I recognized that it did. I said he got a 7-game suspension. I was just making a distinction between the location of the conduct. I guarantee that when the punishment comes Stern is going to make a much of the fact that Gil brought 4 guns to the workplace. May main point, which you miss or purposely choose to ignore because it allows you to play Perry Mason, is that Gil's punishment will be more harsh than Jackson's. Do you actually believe it will be less?

If you catch any of Gilby's latest interviews, you can clearly see a guy who gives off the vibe of someone who couldn't give a crap.

He's paid....got guaranteed money of at least $170 mil.

He's not sweatin' the drama.

That's the same laissez faire attitude that Portis adopted after he got a contract extension gift wrapped to him with plenty of guaranteed money from Snyder totally unsolicited.

Portis pretty much took the entire season off.

I think the action right now is in EG's office, on the phone. Something's going to happen before the trade deadline, although we're going to need some clarity on Gil's situation before we know if he's going to be shipped this year or next.

I do believe he's gone, though. As talented as he is (and several teams may be willing to pick up his expensive contract, based on his play thus far this year), he's worn out his welcome in Washington. The gun play is the just the latest case of "Gilbertology," as Eddie Jordan called it, that should disqualify him for a leadership role on the Wizards.

Yeah, Gilbert's not the leader type, and he's the first to admit it. But that's what we need running the offense in the Saunders system. We need someone at the point who will make the other players better. We need someone like Chris Paul or Darren Williams or Steve Nash who share the ball and still make the big shots.

I think Foye could grow into that position, but he hasn't really been given a shot, mainly because Gilbert and Boykins are sucking up all the minutes. Gilbert's inevitable suspension may turn out to be the first step toward improving this team.

But I am wishing and hoping for a blockbuster trade that brings the Wizards a couple of talented players who can focus on basketball and give the fans a team we can root for.

Do mean the guarantees he got in 2008? After which he proceeded to rush for 1500yds on 350 carries or whatever?

or do you mean in '06 when he seperated his shoulder blasting a defensive player in preseason?

I'm not sure by what definition any of that would be considered "taking the whole season off"

It's clear that it was money well spent by Snyder to give Portis an unsolicited contract extension. Yeah.

Clinton Portis was/is a waste of money and he may be out the door....we can only hope.

Based on Arenas situation and the additional distraction it puts on the team, I would think it best the team him on the inactive list until his legal situation is clear. He's likely to be suspended regardless and is clearly not helping the team win games.

Give Foye a chance to play PG with Miller at SG to see if they can improve the chemistry with Butler and Jamison. At this point, the Wiz have nothing to lose by putting Arenas on the inactive list and trying something new. We'll never know if Foye could be our PG or if he's a better compliment to Butler and Jamison.

Sports people in D.C. are angry. They want a winner, but are unwilling to become ICE HOCKEY fans to get one.

Suppose your professional team was the only one in a city of one million people not affiliated with soccer, and it was named the "FLYING SQUIRRELS." Plus the professional level of competition was degraded by one level. I'd rather be a D.C. sports fan.

Posted by: divi3 | January 4, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

From NBA.com...There is at least one person still willing to offer a spirited defense of Arenas. Very early Monday morning, Arenas's former agent, Dan Fegan, called after I'd texted him to see if Arenas had reached out to him. Arenas parted ways with Fegan in 2006, two years before re-signing with the Wizards for $111 million. I hadn't reached out to Fegan to see if he had an axe to grind; I was just curious if Arenas had asked his advice or counsel on how to handle things. (He hadn't.)

"I would venture a strong guess that it was humor," Fegan said. "He's an off-center kid who has a huge need to be loved. But he doesn't pull guns on teammates ... this is a guy that licked all the powder off of the donuts (while in college) and put talcum powder on them. I've represented hundreds of guys, and there are only about five of them I would turn to if I was in trouble or needed help. This is one of the guys that you could do that with."

Fegan also disputed the notion that the Wizards could be successful if they tried to void the remainder of Arenas' contract, which would make Washington a potential major player in next year's free agent class. No one in the organization has said that Washington would try to void the deal, but no one has said that they wouldn't do that, either. At the least, sources said, the team would not shy away from having internal discussions about it.

"There's no way," Fegan said. "It makes great copy, but it's unfortunate, because it's at Gilbert's expense. They're struggling right now, and because Gilbert's not Kobe, he's taking the heat. He's the 10th leading scorer in the league after a two-year hiatus, and in a few weeks he could be top five. It's absurd that they're talking about that."

you guys are nuts to want to get "rid" of arenas..of course if the right deal came along..but for now he's obviously the best player on the team, and once he's back to speed he will be that much better....yes, they probably paid too much for him, and his knee could go again, but he's still a very, very good player. They are trying to win basketball games, not teach an ethics class. Ty Cobb wasn't a great guy either but he could be on my team any day.

Chemistry, strategy and all that is way overrated. Phil Jackson is a winner because he had jordan, shaq, and bryant. Miller Huggins is in the Hall of Fame because Babe Ruth was on his team. The team with the best players generally wins. Nobody gets any points for being a good guy. Young, McGee, McQuire, O, Foye, Stevenson, and all the other non-contributors on this team are much bigger problems than arenas. we have two number 1 draft choices that never play and don't deserve to. give arenas some more time and some more help and they'll be winning again, and you'll all be wearing arenas jerseys to bed at night.

"Would gil's departure help the wizards at All now?
This team of the big 3 is to win now. Pollin's wish. If Gil leaves, Caron + Jamison knows the team is done with and we'll be stuck in rebuilding process for a while. Just gotta hope Gil gets it together. Trading Gil will demoralize this team further.

As bad as Les BouleS are, they are only 4 games out of the 8th seed spot because the East is gawdawful.

With Gilby gone, this team has made the playoffs in the past with Caron, MeTawn, and BTH.

If Foye, Boykins, and Eminem can provide some "ammo," I think they could do better than the team that made the playoffs sans Gilby.

I guess rules, namely DC, federal, team, and league rules, don't matter to you, but they matter.

Who's gonna be point guard in saunder's system?
I doubt boykins or foye can carry this team.
In Gil we lose our penetrator guy and an important offensive threat

Gil doesn't make his team better, never has, never will.. We need to trade gil for a Shane Battier, Roger Mason type guy. A team player.

We don't need Gil gambling with his team mates disrupting team dynamics with his immaturity.

replacing Gil/Jamison with Mason/Battier is a great strategy to get the #1 pick a few years in a row

If u trade Gil, wiz #1 player for "team player/s" u just got screwed. For the wiz on a huge slump, u seriously need a go to guy. Someone who can create open shots. Who else can disrupt defense and set up their teammates well? Btw remember Gil making Stevenson turn into mr.fifty before? Hilarious now that I think about it.

look at the Houston Rockets, they have no star player.

I do think, Arenas' stock is way down right now.. I say, keep him for now, let him serve his suspension and provide some kind of retribution this season and when his stock is up again, trade him in the summer.

As much as i love Jamison's character, we need a nasty beast down low, we should trade Jamison for a Carl Landry type guy who doesn't mind smiling with out any teeth.

I'd like to see the Wizards pick up Will Conroy. They'd have to cut somebody, like Mike James or Earl Boykins.

"look at the Houston Rockets, they have no star player."

been watching Carl Landry lately? He's on a tear and I think is one of the top 4th quarter scorers in the league. Louis Scola could be coming off the bench soon.

Not that Landry is right now a star player, but he does look to be a rising star.

agree 100% about not moving Arenas now as the return on value would be at its worst.

Trade Scenario

WAS - unloads two 30 something vets, for expiring contract and a great defensive player and a rising star PF.

Butler 9.8 mil
Haywood 6.0 mil
Jamison 11.6 mil

HOU - trades exp., contract for two all-stars to balance their defense with scorers and a legit center

McGrady 23 mil (exp., contract)
Landry 3 mil
Trevor Ariza (6 mil)

Dargregmag - Are you saying you think the JC and GA had an argument over tens of thousands of dollars and no threats were made? Didn't Javaris state that he wasn't gonna be Arenas's punk. I know to millionaires tens of thousands may not sound like much, but there are people with lots of money that will cut your throat for the fun of it. I think its more likely that Gil is backpeddling than the probability that nothing happened. He probably feels fame and money will make this disappear. He even admitted to pushing JC's buttons. If you push my buttons over tens of thousands of dollars and try to make me out to be a punk while youre teasing me, I think the situation would be worse than just a joke.
Gilbert is not a championship type of player and thats what the Wizards are looking for. The league is loaded with very good point guards that make their teammates better. Not as great offensively but better at winning than Gil. The shame is he has the ability, he just has proven repeatedly that he wont play winning basketball. Management has to uphold standards and get rid of a repeat gun toting, selfish, baby. What he did to his teammate was wrong, bringing guns to work is wrong, refusing to play winning basketball is wrong, welshing on bets is wrong, being uncoachable when you make so much is wrong.
If possible void the contract and with the 20 million get a real power forward. We need rebounding, defense some offense and an enforcer mentality. Brenda will be asking way too much after this season. McGee and a real power forward will work out well with our other players and next year fill any holes through the draft.

The Wizards had a second round pick in this years draft that they traded away. Before they traded it they had the opportunity to select DeJuan Blair. Instead they chose to stand pat. We have a need for a powerful rebounding power forward, and have had that need for ten years. Why, Why, Why??? Is Oberto the man? Where was the forward thinking (no pun intended)? This was a major mess-up passing on an inexpensive emerging player. McGhee intimidating shooters while he swept the boards would have been beautiful to watch and he has some offense too.

Antwan says:

"I have a pretty good relationship with the front office people and they have yet to indicate with me that something different is about to happen. They are being very patient and they want to see this thing turn around, but how long do you wait? And how many chances to do give this core group of guys that you have here? Us as players, we know we're in a difficult situation, but we just got to go out there and play hard and know eventually we'll turn things around."

hey captain that all sounds well and good but i hope you don't get it "turned around" after you're eliminated from the playoffs...

wait for a while, some teams managers have erected ears in washington.GA is not what we think.Toronto is interested to add a star, miami is thinking to see where their direction is with wade,New york would be in a despriate situation next season and most off all Rockets did not say no to Arenas trade they are still chewing it

Didn't the Wiz find out how hard it is last year to win without Gil. The team needs new direction but it will not come from Ernie and Flip making decisions. It has to start at the top then work it's way down.

If at all possible you move Arenas. No matter what you take back you move him.

UNLESS, you can void his deal. That would be the perfect situation. This team does not need Arenas. He is not a leader and is not capable of being the face of this or any other franchise. He is not able to rationalize simple sh**. He's not a bad guy or a thug but IS an idiot.

I personally like Gil but I am feed up with his antics. Further, as someone who has been personally affected due to horesplay with firearms(like so many in the DMV), I have and hope the NBA and the Washington Wizards have, ZERO tolerance when it comes to this situation..

A few weeks back someone referred to the Wizards and the "Wiz-Skins". I think that as this story unfolds you will see that this is a team and organization that lacks discipline and it's the root of all it's problems.

go back to when the Wiz made the playoffs and Arenas was allowed to say when and if he was playing. that's organizational dysfunction folks. seems petty, but it's dysfunction.

Another petty but glaring thing to me is you prime players always miss crucial free throws. Arenas should be a 90+% free throw shooter with his shot. Same for Jamison, but they always shoot less than 70% at crucial times. Free throws are a prime reflection of preparation and concentration. this team does not work hard nor prepare hard and it shows.

Translate this petty points to the important aspects of their games like defense and offensive execution, rebounding, etc. and it's the same thing. Look at Nick Young, great athletic talent but has not developed a lick since coming to the Wiz.
