Stern has option to suspend Arenas indefinitely

Commissioner David Stern has the option of suspending Arenas indefinitely, which he did in the case of Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal, Stephen Jackson and Ben Wallace the day after the brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills in November 2004.

In that situation, Stern had video evidence to support a swift punishment. He later doled out severe punishments for the primary instigators, including banishing Artest for the remainder of the season. Stern's actions were taken nearly a year before Artest, Jackson and O'Neal each pleaded no contest to assault charges and received one year on probation, 60 hours of community service, a $250 fine and anger management counseling.

While law enforcement officials continue to gather information about Arenas and his dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton involving guns, the three-time all-star has already admitted to violating D.C. gun laws and league rules by bringing four guns onto NBA property. Arenas has played seven games since his altercation with Crittenton on Dec. 21. Arenas retained high-powered attorney Kenneth L. Wainstein last month specifically for this case.

In the past, gun cases haven't yielded severe punishments from the league office. Sebastian Telfair was the first player to be punished after the league instituted a ban on any weapons at team facilities or offsite promotional appearances in 2005. Telfair, then a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, received a two-game suspension in 2006 after a loaded gun registered to his girlfriend was found in his pillowcase on the team plane.

Stephen Jackson received the stiffest gun-related penalty with a seven-game suspension in 2007 after pleading guilty to one count of felony criminal recklessness after firing five shots outside an Indianapolis strip club the year before.

Arenas has already been suspended one game, in 2004, after he pled no contest to a misdemeanor weapons and vehicle charge for possession a concealed weapon and driving without a license while he was a member of the Golden State Warriors.

Arenas, who turns 28 today, said last night that he plans on meeting with Stern. "Once they hear the real stories, and the stories get out, you put it in David Stern's hands," Arenas said. "What he does, he does."

Arenas also issued an apology to his teammates after the game. "I feel bad for the situation where I've taken them out of my house to get away from my kids, but I bring them to my locker and put all my teammates at risk, even though they weren't loaded," Arenas said. "That's somebody's kids, too. So I'm sorry for all the parents of my teammates."

Please VOID this clown's contract.

Why does everyone put things under a microscope?

Look at the big picture…anytime someone who does something wrong, tries to either cover it up or does not speak to the public, the media is going to make things up.

All Gil and the Wizards had to do from the first day was explain what happened and the media wouldn’t get away with printing rumors?

BUT THEY DIDN”T…I wonder why?

"Once they hear the real stories (since we've had time to come up with something), and the stories get out, you put it in David Stern's hands," Arenas said. "What he does, he does."

"He has the worst contract in the NBA and his foolishness has given the Wizards a chance to restart."

a loser franchise voids their best player's contract (opportunistically) over a misdemeanor because he's not worth the money....i'm sure all the great FAs will flock here after that.

What about Delonte? Still playing and he had 4 LOADED guns!

Arenas was just suspended indefinitely by Stern. Looking forward to the update here...

Posted by: icehippo | January 6, 2010 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Suspended indefinitely, w/o pay. That is the word.

Divi3-

I disagree, a loser franchise sits back and is content with the 8th spot in the playoff every year, similar to the way the Caps were run before Leonsis.

And please, Chris Bosh and the rest of the free agents could care less where the cap space came from, they just want it in their paychecks and bank accounts. I am sure they are all feeling just awful for how Gilbert has or will be treated for his actions.

you miss my point. They care about eventually having their deal voided over a DUI or whatever.

Arenas has been suspended.

Bad move by Arenas last night. When will he learn he's not 12 anymore??

Posted by: and_1 | January 6, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Stern just suspended Arenas indefinitely for "Ongoing conduct [that] has led me to conclude that he is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game."

Coming out last night pretending to have guns was too much for Stern.

Rightfully so.

He's done for the year.

hope you enjoyed last night's foolishness Gil, you idiot

Posted by: divi3 | January 6, 2010 4:01 PM | Report abuse

Why was no one within the Wizards organization advising Gil to keep his mouth (and hands) shut? Or did they advise and he simply ignored them?

Do you really think they were content with 8? The first year yes...Content? Not at all. Leonsis is synonymous with Jesus in D.C....do you realize Leonsis ran a loser team and traded away the players because he was losing money AND they were losing?
Who was the owner when we got Jagr and all those FA's? He's not going to save the Wizards. For reasons I've stated before AND the fact the NBA has a lottery. Last place doesn't mean Ovechkin or even John Wall.

And please, Chris Bosh and the rest of the free agents could care less where the cap space came from, they just want it in their paychecks and bank accounts. I am sure they are all feeling just awful for how Gilbert has or will be treated for his actions.

Tell that to the many teams who had FA money and couldn't GIVE it away.

Real world meets Gilbert Arenas.

He still thinks he's just a cute little kid.

Agent Zero's paycheck just went to 0 for the rest of the season - Happy New Year Gil - let's see, about $20 mil per year, 50 games unpaid, about $12 mil lost, $3 mil per gun. weapons are expensive after all.

Gil - "I think it's funny." "Funny how?" "You think I'm a clown, funny like a clown?" Joe Pesci - gotta love Goodfellas...

Thank god this idiot has been suspended. I'm just upset that the Wizards didn't do it first. I hope he never plays for the Wizards again.

Posted by: kevenjones | January 6, 2010 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Billy Hunter will be in Arenas' corner on this and will keep Stern honest.

There cannot be a double suspension for the same offense. So whenever Arenas comes back, he's back.

how'd we do without your girl Brenda? Werent you supposed to admit we dont her if we won or something?

Posted by: divi3 | January 6, 2010 4:12 PM | Report abuse

Now you Haywood haters will see why we won 19 games last year.

So for the record we have won 3 against the sixers this year with Haywood in. So now he's out. Let's see the results. I'm sure you will see Mcgee tonight.

Posted by: kevenjones | January 5, 2010 6:56 PM

AND will you come on and admit you were wrong if the wizards win LOL I think it probably get sweeped under the rug lol

Posted by: rnorris6 | January 6, 2010 4:18 PM | Report abuse

@divi3,

Do you even understand what you're watching.

Dalembert had a double/double at the half and finished with 20pts/20 rebounds.

They were down 18 in the 3rd. The sixers simply stink as evidence they have loss 3 times to us.

You don't have a clue. You think they won because Haywood was out. They got lucky dude. get a clue.

Posted by: kevenjones | January 6, 2010 4:20 PM | Report abuse

@rnorris6,

You didn't see why they were so bad last year. I guess you didn't see the game either. They were down 18pts. You usually lose games your down by 18pts in the 3rd.

u get a clue as well

Posted by: kevenjones

NO YOU GET A CLUE and stop hifing behind excuses of them getting lucky Man it sure is sad how last night you made such a big deal about Haywood being out now YOU make an excuse that we just got lucky FOR ONCE BE A MAN AND STOP WITH THE EXCUSES LMFAO

Gil's new Nickname: "Paycheck Zero!"

Posted by: terptek | January 6, 2010 4:27 PM | Report abuse

brenda, er i mean kevin,

we go down 18pts in the 3rd all the time with Haywood on the floor

Posted by: divi3 | January 6, 2010 4:28 PM | Report abuse

@divi3 & rnorris6,

Dalembert had 20pt/20 rebounds. What do you want me to say?

The team is better without Haywood? It's not. You don't know what you're talking about.

Posted by: kevenjones | January 6, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

@divi3 & rnorris6,

Ok, I give. Brendon Haywood is the problem with the wizards. He is the worse player on the team. They do not need him.

Both of you are correct. We came back and beat the sixers last night so I was incorrect. They don't need Haywood. I don't have a clue. Haywood SUCKS...

They should start McGee and Haywood should play at the most 5 minutes a game...We would then be a championship caliber team, because Haywood is the problem.

In fact, had Haywood player last night, Dalembert probably would've scored 30pts and had 30 rebounds.

There.
