Wizards (12-24) at Hawks (24-13)

Wizards starters: Randy Foye, Nick Young, Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood

Hawks: Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford

Line: Hawks by 11

With the week that the Wizards have endured, with players taking turns interviewing with investigators in the Gilbert Arenas probe, Coach Flip Saunders said the happiest place to be on Tuesday night was the team plane at Dulles International Airport; the loss to Detroit notwithstanding.

"I think everyone was happy to get on the plane last night; to get away; to know that they weren't going to be summoned to a principles office or anything else, to go talk to somebody about something," Saunders said. "It was an opportunity to maybe just focus on basketball. These guys haven't had a chance to catch their breath since this thing started. It's been the pressure of the whole situation, what they are going through as far as the investigation. The media pressure, with the constant asking of all the questions. So they really haven't had a chance to concentrate on just being a basketball player."

The Wizards have lost two in a row, but Saunders said the one positive has been the play of Antawn Jamison, who is averaging 29.8 points the past five games, including three games with at least 31 points.

"Antawn has been unbelievable," Saunders said. "You hope that the other guys can see his approach to the game, his professionalism. I thought there were times when we were running in mud, but he's one guy that wasn't. So you hope that he's going the same thing and guys can take the same mental approach that he's taking for the game and the same veracity and how energized he is and kind of carry that through. Even when things aren't going quite well, he doesn't hold his head down, he just tries to fight through it and he takes accountability."

This will be the final night that the Wizards have only had 11 players available. They can move Gilbert Arenas to the inactive list on Friday against the Chicago Bulls. Although Arenas is suspended indefinitely, the Wizards had to keep him on the active list for five games.

17-13 after the first quarter. Are they playing 21?

Some quality basketball.

If the Hawks were halfway decent tonight the Wizards would be down by 35.

This is going to be one of those 92-65 games, I'm afraid.

Got a online feed if anyone needs a link.

They pretty much just said how much Caron sucks this year and they don't think he's the same person. LOL

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 13, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Got it on the dish.

Just a horrible display of basketball by both teams.

Wow.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Will the Wizards top 20 points by half?

Gonna' be close.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Get Boykins off the court.

Posted by: alvin4 | January 13, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

thank god this aint in HD, too ugly.

23-4 since Flip substituted Boykins for Foye

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I prayed for a season ending injury for Boykins for Christmas.

That just shows there is no Santa Claus.

I remember after his first two or three games everyone was so in love with him...now nobody wants him on the team.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 13, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Hate to say it....but it would be good to have Gil in uniform right now. Jamison Butler and Young are off.

Game over.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 13, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Outside of Foye and Jamison, the rest of the team is 2-for-21 with 6 TOs.

I want my money back.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 7:55 PM | Report abuse

where's the guy who said we're better without Gil?

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2010 7:57 PM | Report abuse

why cant Foye play 45mins? He's 6'1" and 24yrs old. NO MORE EARL

flip sucks ballz

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2010 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Which one...there are A LOT of them. They have no defense and no offense now either.

At least Gil got in the lane to get to the line. I don't know when the last time I saw that was.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 13, 2010 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Ernie...If your reading this ...PLEASE BLOW THIS DEBACLE UP! Send Nick Young, Blatche, Mike james, Dribble OUT THE SHOT CLOCK BOYKINS, and OBERTO packing!NO energy off the bench at all! At least Gil kept games semi close! this is terrible!

Posted by: rf2litenva | January 13, 2010 8:00 PM | Report abuse

So what happens when they Gil doesnt get a felony? How long of a suspension? If it isn't season long...do the Wizards put him back in uniform since they clearly won't be able to void the contract?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 13, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

45-33 at half.

Really, the Hawks should be embarassed more than the Wizards.

That was one of the worst displays of basketball I've seen in awhile. Just horrendous.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully the Wizards can get Foye under contract. He Jamison, Haywood, and occasionally Butler have been the only real bright spots over the past few games.

Of course, they need Miller back too.

Posted by: JPRS | January 13, 2010 8:08 PM | Report abuse

So what happens when they Gil doesnt get a felony?

They'll blow up that bridge when they get to it.

My guess is that he won't ever play again for the Wizards unless they're forced to by the league and/or player's association.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Geez how is Boykins a -14 already?

I never thought I would WANT to see Mike James on the court.

Oh goodie! DeBrick starts the 3rd.

Posted by: elfreako | January 13, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Caron cant even dribble anymore

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

I think its best to let gil stay out the entire season. Make trades to get as many draft picks as possible. Then try your best to get John Wall and build around him and Gil. Even or when gil comes back we still need him to be moved to the 2 guard position. Carron wants to be traded soo bad, you can see it in his play. So every game he plays for us his value goes down.

Posted by: dsquare | January 13, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Instant offense.

What can Saunders do? He's got zilch to work with.

But starting Stevenson is just crazy.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

shiiiiiiiiit, foye can play

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

And then he makes a 3-pointer to cut it to 6.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 8:24 PM | Report abuse

DeShawn for 3!

Yeah Foye is nice. I was surprised he wasn't playing earlier.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 13, 2010 8:24 PM | Report abuse

If Nick Young isn't scoring he's totally useless.

Jamison never gives up, even the playoff series a few years back when he lost Gil and Caron. I only wish him the best. Class act.

I remember that...they were completely outmanned...and he carried them as much as he could.

Looks like he's gonna have a 20/20 games tonight.

The 3rd quarter rally to overcome the Boykins induced 2nd quarter collapse. Nothing new.

Butler is an easy cover nowadays.

So Mike Wise reports that Gilbert's in discussions that would result in no jail time. I guess the judge is part of the country's gun problem, too, SteveMGawdamianinsufferablejerk.

I really dont agree with that assessment, but I feel your fustration. Gil is still a pretty good player, the Wiz just need to put his azz in check. When comes back hopefully next year all the "guff-ball" crap is over. Also keep Haywood, McGee, McGuire(inspired),maybe Foye, move Gil to the 2 guard and trade everyone else.

BLATCHE.....AN AIRBALL LAYUP!!?????!!! GODDDDDNESSSSS!! I've seen it all!

I really feel for Gil during his current troubles but basketball wise, he has been rightfully by several analysts as one of the worst defenders in the league, if not the worst. Although he is a highly talented offensive player, you have $111 millions tied to a player that only focuses on one end of the court. That's not even a recipe for having a winning record, let alone contending.

Posted by: Utilityman1 | January 13, 2010 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Just a layup line with Blatche at the 5.

Posted by: alvin4 | January 13, 2010 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Utilityman1 | January 13, 2010 9:05 PM

Youre 100% correct and how can we fix that. We may have a 111 million dollar man come off the bench... thats what flip says.
Arenas can play defense he just dont want to. Again "check his AZZZZZ!!!"

Posted by: dsquare | January 13, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

I guess the judge is part of the country's gun problem, too,

His discussion, of course, would be with the prosecutor and not the judge. Since no charges have been formally brought against him, no judge has been assigned to the case. It's called plea bargaining.

Since I'm not an blithering idiot who knows nothing about the Constitution, the law, and common sense I'm aware of such details.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Flipp says hes gonna start Stevenson over Nick. So basicly Nick is a back-up 2 guard he will never really be a starter.

Posted by: dsquare | January 13, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

And just for the record, for whatever that's worth, I've never said the country has a "gun problem."

Nope.

But hey, let's make things up since it's easier to argue with fantasy positions.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 13, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

From the Wise piece:
If the grand jury were to charge Arenas, he likely would face charges of carrying a handgun without a license, which is a felony and punishable by up to five years behind bars. Because he has said he had four guns in the Verizon Center locker room, he could face up to 20 years in jail.

I said three weeks ago he was facing 5 years. And that was based on the reports that he had drawn a guy at Crittenton. Facing does not mean charged since the investigation was still going on when I made the comment.

Obviously, unless there's more to this, the prosecutor won't throw the book at him and give him all that.

Looks like I'm right again. That makes my record here perfect.

Who would have thought that this season would be at least as bad, if not worse, then last season?

And, this nightmare of a season isn't even 1/2 done yet.

Posted by: DC_MAN88 | January 13, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Right, keep telling yourself that, SmuglyMG.

Posted by: mike8 | January 13, 2010 11:15 PM | Report abuse

SteveMG,

The public account has consistently been that Arenas placed guns either on a chair or in Crit's locker -- not that he pointed a gun at anyone.

The only source that indicated that the two drew guns on each other was the NY Post. By basing your assumptions on a heresay account printed in Rupert Murdoch's putrid NY Post it's fair to deduct "judgment" points.

Posted by: JPRS | January 13, 2010 11:55 PM | Report abuse

Fellas, I just traded Oberto, Mike James, and Domo Mcguire to Atlanta for Marvin Williams and Joe Smith on NBA 2K10!!!!They should do this "on the low" trade for real!

The only source that indicated that the two drew guns on each other was the NY Post.

False.

Anyone can verify my claim. Just google "Arenas, guns".

Here's a hit. ABC News (Link):

The New York Post and Yahoo! Sports first reported that the Washington Wizards' teammates pulled guns during an argument about a gambling debt in the team's locker room at the Verizon Center.

End of story.

Next?
