Wizards' afternoon brew: more Arenas reaction

Despite an abundance of distractions, the Wizards beat the 76ers last night, 104-97. Here is Michael Lee's postgame wrap-up. Gilbert Arenas was booed by the Philadelphia crowd, and he goofed around before the game by pretending to shoot his teammates. After the game, he said: "If I really did something wrong, I would feel remorse in what I did, but I didn't do anything."

Mike Wise wrote an excellent column about Arenas, framed as an open birthday card.(Today is Arenas's birthday. He's 28.)

Michael Wilbon agreed with Al Sharpton's criticism of Arenas.

Meanwhile, prosecutors began presenting evidence to a D.C. Superior Court grand jury Tuesday in the gun case.

Mike Jones Sports comments on Arenas's antics, among other things.

It's hard to keep up with all of the opinions that are floating around about Arenas, but here are a couple:

* Karl Malone "blasts" Arenas at SI.com.

* Bethlehem Shoals at FreeDarko.com reacts to the media circus surrounding the story.

Around the League ...

There were nine games last night. Here are highlights, courtesy of NBA.com's Daily Zap:

If Gilbert doesn't start doing the "blowing on the barrel before he puts his guns back in his holster" dance after every three pointer, I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

When Stern lets him walk (that's right, I said it), we can actually turn the name back to Bullets and make it a marketing gimmick.

prepare for the worst my man, seems like the whole country has decided arenas needs to go away. Stern cant do anything less than 30games i'm afraid

chris mills got less than 10 games for stopping the blazers team bus at gunpoint. Cap'n Jack got less than 10 games for bangin his hammer in public , and Telfair got less than 10 games for taking "his girlfriends gun" on a team flight. if 30 games is worst case i suppose it's not the whole season, but it seems very harsh especially if no one TESTIFIES that there was any threat of violence. The team and players seem to want this to go away. we'll see in a coupla days.

BTW is any1 else seriously getting fed up with Flip Saunders?
Arenas, Butler, Jamison and Haywood can do no wrong with him. And everyone else is just among his rotating mess.

It's getting old real fast. His so-called big changes were a complete joke and just another fifth man rotating in and out while the regular 4 continued their Groundhog Day ways.

This guy hasn't done anything creative. All he's done is follow the same path as Eddie Jordan while squashing his young players like Young and McGee and McGuire.

Saunders is a real disappointment and more responsible for this horrible season than the players. His lack of coaching and leadership is really amazing.

dovelevine,

preach it! i been saying Flip stinks for weeks. The amount he's leaned on Earl while banishing Nick Young is something to behold.

Even us dumbass fans can see that Nick and Gil together give us a strong look, and the results and stats bear that out.

Either Flip is an idiot or it's behind-the-scenes crap affecting rotations

"Michael Wilbon agreed with Al Sharpton's criticism of Arenas."

And, given that Sharpton's statements are based on the initial NY Post report of the incident, which has since been proven to be a work of near complete fiction, then Wilbon is just as much of a chucklehead as Sharpton.

Well said and I could not agree more. The win feels great. The only bad part is Flip will now feel like he can play Oberto and Stevenson more not less. Makes no sense. Flip may decide that Stevenson was the reason we won and not play Nick at all tonight. Again, McGee, Foye and Nick should be getting those minutes. People calling to blow the team up and get young talent or draft picks must not be watching the games. Flip's not developing the young talent we have right now.

those other incidents didnt seem to blow up like this one, pressure is on to make an example of Gil.

Hopefully if Stern tries that, the players union will point to those examples and appeal.

Stern can do anything he wants.

If Stern drops the hammer on Arenas, I'm sure Billy Hunter won't waste any time pointing out that Captain Jack got a week off for firing 5 live rounds on a crowded street (presumably after a night of drinking, no less, given that he was coming out of a club).

Any hope of a reasonable 'sentence' from Stern, something that recognizes that Gil is a harmless bozo who usually does good things, went out the window with last night's "Stern is mean" comment and mock shooting. Gil trashed the first two years of his contract and has apparently decided this one's trashable as well. You don't do yesterday if you think otherwise. So, from someone who pays for tickets and is not handed them by companies or law firms .. thanks for nothing Gil. The season is toast. And after they get finished dumping everyone .. so will next year and probably the one after that. Helluva contract.

It is a curse, right? Webber era looked bright. Tank. Jordan picks Kwame. Total bomb. And now the Gil era .. wasted. Nice building though, great staff too.

Here's mud in your eye.

tslats - Gilbert TRASHED the first 2 years of his contract? That's like saying Sean Taylor didn't live up to his contract. Some people have zero compassion.

Plays against doctor's orders, doesn't follow team's rehab recommendations/procedures but while out, a lot, trashes Caron et al. Sympathy for what? That's he's rich beyond all dreams now so he can make his own rules? Good for him, wish it were me, but don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. Plus .. if you needed any more proof it's all about Gil, yesterday's act with all that will now follow are proof enough. He's got his.

Posted by: tslats | January 6, 2010 3:12 PM | Report abuse

but how did he trash the first 2 yrs of the contract.

Plays against doctor's orders- u mean play basketball, for the washington wizards? isn't that his contractual obligation?

doesn't follow team's rehab recommendations/procedures- it was going out and working with an independant trainer Tim Grover at his private Attack Fitness Gym in Chicago, that finally got Gil over the hump and back into the top 10 in the NBA in scoring and Asst.

but while out, a lot, trashes Caron et al - give quotes to back this up........wait a minute Caron is playing like trash no harm no foul.

U don't have to hate Gil just because you don't like him. All that was out yerass come with something better.

The Wilbon article totally sucks and Im shocked that he wrote that since on PTI he seemed to act like he knew that Gil didnt draw down on Critt and both he & Kornheiser seem to act like it shouldnt be a super huge suspension. Again, the thing that is killing Gil is the NY Post story. Its pretty clear now that it didnt happened nothing like that yet everyone is speaking Nationally like it did. Everyone still thinks that they had a Wild West type of near gun fight in the locker room. Even Stephen Jackson said something dumb like that. Its crazy. It didnt happened that way but I feel that Gil will pay for people thinkign that

Posted by: dlts20 | January 6, 2010 4:12 PM | Report abuse

I predict the wizards will play much better without this fool in the lockeroom. I'm so happy Stern finally suspended him. I'm just upset he wasn't suspended by the team first. He should've been suspended as soon as he admitted to bringing the guns into the lockeroom..

Posted by: kevenjones | January 6, 2010 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Again, we can disagree about facts but interjecting the work 'hate' .. tells me something about you all who use the word.

Bottom line is what just happened .. Gil is suspended indefinitely. Thanks for nothing.

You all throwing around the word sympathy and hate .. you think Gil has sympathy for you the ticket holder? Think he loves you .. is grateful for shelling out a hundred bucks a game? I think his actions last night answer those questions. That annoyed me because this season is now officially toast and it is all, as in all, Gil's fault. Great player .. years ago.
