Arenas plans to go from No. 0 to No. 6

Hawks (40-23) at Wizards (21-40)

Wizards starters: Randy Foye, Mike Miller, Al Thornton, Andray Blatche, JaVale McGee

Hawks: Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford

Line: Hawks by 7

Agent Zero is no more. If Gilbert Arenas plays again for the Washington Wizards, he will not wear his signature No. 0. The team confirmed on Thursday that Arenas has submitted the paperwork to have his jersey number changed to No. 6 next season.

Arenas has worn No. 0 ever since he played college basketball at Arizona. Arenas said he wore the number because he was told he wouldn't see any playing time at that the storied program.

The No. 6 is significant because Arenas's birthday is Jan. 6 - which is also the day that the NBA gave Arenas an indefinite suspension for his behavior after it was revealed that he brought guns to the locker room at Verizon Center in a dispute with teammate Javaris Crittenton. Arenas was suspended for the remainder of the season on Jan. 27 and faces sentencing in two weeks after pleading guilty to a felony gun charge.

Cleveland Cavaliers all-star forward LeBron James also filed the paperwork to change his jersey number to No. 6 from No. 23, claiming that it is out of deference to Michael Jordan. Mike Miller currently wears No. 6, which was previously worn by Antonio Daniels.

Al Thornton was playing on another coast, basking in sunny weather when the snowstorm forced the NBA's 31st weather-related postponement since 1963. But his trade from the Los Angeles Clippers has him taking on a task that few have been asked to complete: playing back-to-back-to-back games, beginning Thursday against the Atlanta Hawks.

"I know, right?" Thornton said with a laugh. "I've never been part of that. But you got to fight through it. It's all good. It's going to be fun. I think we're embracing it. We should embrace it."

Washington is also the last NBA team to play three consecutive games on consecutive nights. From March 6-8 in 2000, the Wizards lost at home to Orlando, won in Minnesota and beat New York at home in overtime. The Wizards played three sets of back-to-back-to-back games in the 1999 lockout-shortened season, going 2-1 in the first set and 1-2 in the next two sets.

After the Houston Rockets got 14 fast-break points on Tuesday, Coach Flip Saunders commented on how Andray Blatche and JaVale McGee run differently depending on what end of the court they are on, leaving opportunities for opposing big men to get easy baskets. "We run uphill on defense and downhill on offense. It's like our court's titled," Saunders quipped.

Blatche and McGee will get a serious test against the Hawks, who have some fast, athletic big men in Al Horford and Josh Smith. The Hawks also rank fourth in the NBA in fast-break points.

"I think that's their strength," he said. "They are one of the best teams as far as being able to finish, from defense to offense. Our scouting report is our bigs don't run well, from the offensive end to the defensive end. We're getting out run by a lot of bigs, whether it's [Andrew] Bogut or [Luis] Scola. We got to take away the easy ones those bigs get."

The Wizards have been unable to reach 90 points in their past five games, but Saunders said a lot of factors have played a role. "I think not having Josh [Howard] definitely hurts us," he said, "but sometimes it's some of the teams we're playing against. Milwaukee is one of the better defensive teams. Boston is one of the better defensive team. A lot, it boils down to, sometimes it's the teams you're playing against. We came out of the break against Minnesota. They're not a good defensive team. So you're going to score some teams."

So how does this work out to file paperwork when MM wears 6 already?

Posted by: DC_MAN88 | March 11, 2010 7:12 PM | Report abuse

So if we re-sign Mike Miller (which god I pray we do), what happens then? Wouldn't he have the right to the number?

Posted by: djnumb | March 11, 2010 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Gilby paid BTH, and would probably have to pay MM.

Posted by: DC_MAN88 | March 11, 2010 7:21 PM | Report abuse

What is more of note to me is that the number 6 is also being asked for by Lebron.

Now we know that Gilbert knew this. But Gilbert flys under suspicion as a jab at Lebron for the number 6 has great significance to him being his birthday and his suspension date and all.

Funny. Ya' think the Commish' might deny the paperwork?

I am liking Livingston the more I see of him. It appears he knows how to run a team and control the floor.

He puts Boykin further down the depth chart, good, and we should see less of Foye's lack of floor generalship, also good.

I can also see where Livingston will clearly make any consideration of Javaris Crittenton, moot.

Another 2nd half swoon. Nice game by Dray. NY is getting buckets. Foye's plays worse with every game. I thought Miller was a keeper early on, but his contract for next year (wherever he plays) is getting closer to minimum with every game, as well. Livingston shoots about as well as Crittenton. Cassell should work with Shaun on his shot.

Can someone tell Foye his range is out to 20 feet? He'd be 5 of 6 if he'd stick to it. Rip made a career of sticking to that range.

Larry,
You gotta admit you bring some serious Christmas Eve enthusiasm. At the beginning of the year you were sold out for Miller, remember some Bird comparisons. I like what I see early from Livingston, but honestly he is about as fragile as they come. He simply may not be able to ever play consecutive games, or even play consistently at all. Let’s see if the guy is even around at the end of the year before we crown him. No offense…

'Dray drops about the easiest looking 30 you're gonna see. Soft Js, layups in traffic, nuttin-but-net fadeaways, hits his Fts, over 50%FG.

Nothing flukey going on, just who he is as a player now.

Gotta love it!

I know that is an off the wall comment. But the reason I say it is because of his gamemanship. Even though Crawford can eat him alive, he dosen't back down and he does a much better job of running the Team now and I mean right now than Foye or Boykins.

The other things that he was doing on the floor I like twice as better than what Foye and Boykins can do.

And Yeah, I made those glorious comparisons about Mike Miller at the beginning of the season and so far I was dead wrong about him.

Somebody else I was dead wrong about also is Flip Saunders.

"The team confirmed on Thursday that Arenas has submitted the paperwork to have his jersey number changed to No. 6 next season."

Why.

"I think Gil's first new number is going to be inmate #0012894523."

Lol, and there's no #6 to be found in that number. :)

"Mike Miller can only make wide open shots. If he has to rush or somebody in his face? Clank"

I like MM, but I was thinking the same thing watching him play tonight. When AJ, BH, and CB were all here he got open looks and made them. Something the Wiz sorely needed.

He can't create for himself and that's a big fat minus on this team.

Ok, this is what I was thinking tonight:

Gil comes back.

McGee and Blatche start next year.

You sign Chris Bosh to a max deal.

Draft a guard with the high pick the Wiz should get.

Try and keep some of the knuckle-heads that are here on the roster and maybe add a couple.

The Wiz might actually look loke a decent team next year.

I'm with Larry the Wizards Cable Guy on this one. Shawn is better already that anything we see in a PG right now. Foye shoot first mentally was terrible tonight. At least Gilbert is a real threat when he shoots. Foye never got the the ball to Blatche in the 4th... What PG don't go to the money man down the stretch? EG need to admit he wasted our 5th pick because neither MM or RF need to come back...I would much rather have GA or Shawn Liv next year or may be John Wall.

"NY tearin it up, good thing he hit his first shot so Flip didnt yank him eh rphill??"

No, good he hit his first shot bc usually if he misses the first one he immediately sulks and does nothing much the rest of the night. Two misses in a row and it's over. Funny, the exact quote from Chenier when he made his first shot "that's always a good sign when NY makes the first one." Regardless, he didn't "tear" anything up. He played pretty well for him and that's it. Exaggeration is not going to prove any point.

If you want to tout anybody tonight, it should be JM. He actually did "tear" it up for him. Nice game. Actually tried to stay on the ground more than usual and lo and behold he can rebound. For once, we seemed to be on par with Atlanta in the athleticism department thanks in large part to him. Nice game JM! By the way, he got a couple of awful fouls called against him so the 5 fouls is not what should have been.

Classic NY. Fast break with him dribbling up the court and JM ahead of him to the left. Instead of giving the easy lob to JM for a dunk, which is basketball 101, he takes it to the basket himself with the defender focused on him. He got the foul call, but I think the defender knew something about NY and it was the wrong play for NY to make.

By the way, can you guys just stop nitpicking any and everything FS does? It's annoying and ignorant. His rotations were about spot on this game as they are on most nights. The improvement between him and EJ is very noticeable.

["Mike Miller can only make wide open shots. If he has to rush or somebody in his face? Clank"

Not exactly breaking news.

Posted by: kalo_rama]

lol...yeah, not breaking news. The longer the season has gone the more I see the major flaws in his game. How in the world he ever signed a contract for $11 million a year is beyond me. He should be no better than the 5th or 6th best player on your team if you plan on doing much of anything. But, I'll take him for $4 million maybe.

Changing to number 6 is not going to change who Arenas is. I'll give him two months back in the league and he'll be up to his usual "bafoonery". Let Miller keep number 6 and "deep 6" Arenas for some younger talent.
