Young scoring but not dunking; Flip having "fun"

Wizards (21-41) at Pistons (22-42)

Wizards starters: Randy Foye, Mike Miller, Al Thornton, Andray Blatche, JaVale McGee

Pistons: Will Bynum, Richard Hamilton, Jonas Jerebko, Tayshaun Prince, Jason Maxiell

Line: Pistons by 6

In the locker room before the game, JaVale McGee was giving Nick Young a hard time because he doubled Young's season total in dunks (four) with eight against the Atlanta Hawks. Young told McGee that it's tough for a wing player to get inside for dunks all the time, before McGee interrupted him and mocked Young for attempting a finger roll in Thursday's game.

"You could've dunked last night," McGee said.

"I'm a finesse player now," Young joked.

Young has definitely picked up his play the past two games. After going scoreless in just three minutes in Boston, Young has averaged 17.5 points against Houston and Atlanta. He has also shot 50 percent from the floor in those games.

"I think he's hit a couple of shots early, which has gotten his energy going," Coach Flip Saunders said. "The other thing is, sometimes, when you sit on the bench a long time and you know unless you play with some energy, you're not going to play, so it's a combination. He's responded."

Young said he just wants to keep this roll going. "I'm trying to go out, be more aggressive and play with energy," Young said. "When I'm out there, I'm trying to play hard and get the team going. If I can play with energy on both ends of the court, then hopefully Coach will continue to put me out there."

While Young has begun to heat up, Al Thornton continues to get off to slow starts. He had just two points in the first half against Atlanta and finished with seven points. In the previous game against Houston, Thornton had just six points through the first three quarters, failing to get going until the fourth quarter when he scored nine points didn't have to contend much with the Rockets' Shane Battier.

Thornton said his problems have nothing to do with the players defending him. "I got to find a way to be aggressive early. I got to find a way to get going early," he said.

Flip Saunders is 0-3 against his former team and is hoping to avoid getting swept. "Gotta get one," Saunders said. "We want to find a way to win, not just because it's Detroit, but because we've been playing hard and playing the right way, you want them to be rewarded for how they've played."

Saunders said the past three losses have been determined largely because of turnovers. The Wizards have committed 58 turnovers, which have resulted in 66 points for their opponents. "We have to cut back on turnovers, which have really been a thorn in our side," Saunders said.

Back in his former stomping grounds, Saunders was asked about how difficult this season has been and provided an interesting answer. "I've had a lot of fun the last two weeks," he said. "With our young players, to see how Andray [Blatche], how JaVale are improving and they've improved by leaps in bounds. That's something we can hang our hat on, knowing that we're going to have Gilbert [Arenas]. We're going to have draft picks and we're going to have a lot of cash. We're going to have the ability to change this team drastically. What we're tyring to do now is see what we have now. The decisions we have to make this offseason are as big a decisions that we've made in a long time."

Flip Saunders is an idiot.

So Flip really thinks sitting Nick is responsible for his improved play the last two games.

Amazing.

Does anybody know why Livingston isn't playing?

Posted by: LarryInClintonMD | March 12, 2010 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Miller should be getting major pine. But I guess it with never happen with Flip coaching.

Singleton should be eating all his minutes in this game.

This is why I hate Flip. Boykins was useless and never should have been put in the game.

Livingston should have gotten major minutes and Flips sticks him in for about 2 minutes.

Miller sucks big time but he plays and plays. Why?

I can't see how anyone can say that Flip is doing the best he can.

Geez.

2nd half is not even 2 minutes old and he sends in Singleton for McGee.

Why?

Singleton should have replaced Miller, we need more toughness all around. What is Flip looking at.

I see Flip has been taking advice from kal... no wonder the guy is a loser?

Is Livingston hurt or is he in Flip's doghouse from last night when Crawford scored a lay up on him at the end of the third Q'?

What is up with this coaching?

LarryInClintonMD.

Oh, Oh, I know, it's the players. Sorry.

Ride the pine mostly. And Livingston too. Miller's getting major minutes though. What is he doing?

63 points in three quarters with Foye running the point and being subbed by Boykins.

Flip should get sick or something so one of his assistants like Cassell can take over so we can score some dang points.

Does anybody remember back in day when there used to be a running joke on the court about the guy you did not have to guard?

No one ever expended any effort to guard him because you always knew he wasn't going to try to score and he would always miss if he did.

We always called him self check.

The more I see of Mike Miller he reminds me of that guy. I don't know what he is trying to do out there. Why is he getting the minutes? It is a joke on Flip.

He is living off what Mike Miller should be doing instead of what he is actually doing.

Miller right now is as bad as Fabulous.

MM is the only guy doing what Flip wants. He's going for the pin pong balls. Spot on rotations again eh, rphilli?meanwhile the pistons are trying to set records on us.

Larry, it's all about the lottery. Sit back and enjoy the rest of the season. The better the pick, the more options we will have to improve our team next season.

I didn't bother watching the interviews after the game. I believe it's going to be another episode of Flip getting on Andray's and Javale's asses. He would never say anything about the rest of his team made up of short forwards who can't shoot, led by two point guards who aren't. Or maybe he talked up the energy of the new guys on the team who can jump all night, but can't shoot a hoot. You can tell I'm ecstatic.

Will Bynum got 20 assists. He's a former D Leaguer. Undrafted. Played overseas. Two years in the D League. The Wizards can find players in the D League too, if they are smart.

Hey Larry, just shut up. You are annoying. Blah, blah blah with no substance.

Livingston played like crap too tonight. Don't know what f'ing game you were watching.

Why you guys beeitch about an undermanned team losing is beyond me, but it is funny. Make that an undermanned team that is about to be extremely tired. This is going to get ugly. But, I'm sure guys like Larry will stupidly gripe about rotations. Ignorance is bliss!

i have been saying it since day one, flip is not the answer. instead of buying out gilbert's contract, it should be flips. there had to be a reason that he wasn't hired by anyone for so long. teams have quit on him in the past, he is not capable of coaching the new generations of players. he surely doesn't know how to play the right players.

Flip's a proven NBA coach. With pretty much zero proven NBA players.

Until next year--Let's go Mavs! (And may the Cavs inherit some of the luck-of-the-Wiz.)
