Washington Wizards get No. 1 pick

Tonight the Washington Wizards landed the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft lottery.

After going 26-56 this season and losing a tiebreaker with the Golden State Warriors, the Wizards had the fifth-best chance (10.3 percent) of getting the No. 1 overall pick, which is expected to be either Kentucky point guard John Wall or Ohio State forward Evan Turner. They could have picked no worse than eighth overall.

The New Jersey Nets, who finished with the league's worst record (12-70), had a 25 percent chance of landing the top choice and ended up with the No. 3 pick.

PG: John Wall
SG: Gilbert Arenas
C: Javale McGee

PF: Andray Blatche

I caught Turner's face as well. Didn't look overly enthusiastic to me either. Dude (fogot his name) on Comcast also thought the Wiz should take Turner. Thought he would be a better fit for the Wiz and that he would be a great lockeroom addition an that he would probably mesh better with Gil if Gil is still here.

"Not to burst your bubble, but it actually took Ted years to turn the Caps around."

It's WAY easier to turn a franchise around in the NBA then in hockey.

Here's the thing...you draft Wall, move Gil to the 2 and just let him shoot. Now you just need to take care of your front court. Blatche can play PF, McGee can play Center. Or you can play Thorton and Blatche with McGee off of the bench. Then they STILL have money to spend on thier 5th player, NOW what about luring Bosh here to DC????

You have Howard hopefully coming back, Singleton off of the bench.

Things just got much better in DC.

Is Lebron A Possibilty?

I talked about this the other day but not many saw it. I said I have never ever thought it was possible before so it never would even cross my mind but after the Cavs were eliminated I said that it wouldnt shock me at all if we were a dark horse for Lebron. DC is a solid size market, we have now a great new owner in Leonsis, everyone loves to live in DC, and everyone keeps talking about Lebron loving Rose & Noah but what about Gil & Dray? I think he would consider that and I think he likes the thought of a coach like Flip Saunders. I said add in a top 5 pick and we may be a dark horse because he's friends with Gil and if he see's Gil looking like a beast this summer then he may consider us. Now you add to that the #1 pick and I still think Lebron and maybe now even a Wade would look at that but espically Lebron. Wade would still be iffy because we will most likely draft a guard but if you team Lebron with Gil, Wall or Turner, Dray, Livinston, Singelton, and Thorton then I think we look pretty good.

I also think McGee will soon take a solid leap espically if we have playmakekrs around him. I think we can make a nice jump even without a Lebron type and it may be better to play one more year and then go after a Melo the following year but Im just saying it wouldnt shock me. Everyone loves the Bulls every year but they never do anything. Id rather be on the Wiz in our system. Even if we dont get him though, I feel good about our new look, espically with the new system. The combo of Gil/Livigston or Gil/Wall, or Gil/Turner looks very good in Flip's new system which makes it more friendly for both spots, atleast Offensively. I think no matter what, we will have a very good player beside Gil that will make him elevate his game. Alot of you probably want him gone now though. I think that may be possible only if a team like Orlando gets killed by Boston and Othis Smith wants Gil

We can definitely afford one max contract, but I don't think we can afford two (unless those trade exceptions we picked up can factor in). Just based on our current cap situation, we can sign one max FA and still have some cap room left over.

As far as drafting anyone other then Wall, don't be stupid. He's the consensus best player in the draft. Durant was better then Oden, but many people said you can't pass on a big man and look where it got Portland.

Durant only played one year of ball as well.

The Wiz cannot fit two new max deals under the cap, but they can fit one and a mid-level deal. They also have trade exceptions at their disposal, which could be used to snag a guy from a team with cap/financial issues that does not want to take on similar contracts.

It's a bit presumptuous of ESPN to have John Wall hanging out by the camera during the lottery.

As good as John Wall supposedly is, I'm not sure he is a franchise player.

I think for this draft, teams will pick players based on need.

There's really no reason to draft someone in a position if you already have a quality player there on your team.

John wall was the first player Calipari EVER went out of his way to suggest he went straight to the NBA.

EVERY nba scout has him graded out highest.

What is it that you people aren't getting here?

It took Turner 3 years to be as good as he is, where as John Wall is better with much less experience, plus he is a true floor leader, a true PG with the offensive skill set of a SG RIGHT NOW, a true PG is something EVERY wizards fan knows we've needed for at least 3 years.

Are you guys just being devils advocates? Did you even watch NCAA basketball?

There's really no reason to draft someone in a position if you already have a quality player there on your team.

Posted by: DC_MAN88 | May 18, 2010 9:10 PM

Nearly feel out of my chair when I read this. Did DCMan just show Gil some love?
Nah, he'll probably say he meant Livingston.

Posted by: SportzWiz | May 18, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

This is for the people asking about max contracts...

If the Wizards decline an $11.8 million player option for Josh Howard, acquired from Dallas in the trade that send Butler and Haywood to the Mavericks, they will have nearly $20 million in cap space – enough for a max player and then some to go with Wall, Arenas, restricted free agent Randy Foye, JaVale McGee, Andray Blatche, and role players Nick Young, Al Thornton and Quinton Ross.

Posted by: ATLredskin | May 18, 2010 9:22 PM | Report abuse

This is a great day for the Wizards, but not so sure how great it will turn out for DC. The Wizards always seem to find a way to screw up draft opportunities... I worry that the same people are running the show now as picked Tom Gugliotta, Kwame Brown & keep Gilbert Arenas around despite his chronic injuries and arrests. I'd hate to see all of DC pin its hopes on John Wall's 19 year old back-- and end up in the situation Cleveland now finds itself in: dependent on a superstar who can't get over the hump, who is surrounded by a disjointed set of roleplayers...

Posted by: Scagg | May 18, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

"It took Turner 3 years to be as good as he is, where as John Wall is better with much less experience, plus he is a true floor leader, a true PG with the offensive skill set of a SG RIGHT NOW, a true PG is something EVERY wizards fan knows we've needed for at least 3 years."

Longer then that actually and I will throw one more at you...ESPN compares Wall to combo of Kidd and Rose.

He's that good and Turner is a SG in the NBA. He's a true PG and unless you have Rose, Kidd, or a Nash you take the guy every time. Those guys just don't grow on trees.

Again, Durant only played one year in college and look at him now so that basically means nothing. Dwight Howard never even played college ball.

If Turner was better then he would be projected #1 but he's not. You can't pass on this kid.

Actually both guys would be good for the wizards, just like Hardin, Evans, Curry or Jennings would have been good for them last year had they picked any one of them. There is no bad pick between Turner and Wall. Either will help the wizards. Too bad we cant have both.

Love it, great stuff, but the look on Wall's face afterwards reminded me eerily of Steve Franchise's sour puss after he got drafted second by Vancouver in '99. And we know how that went. Please someone divest me of such wanton negativity...

Hopefully he's just concerned about entering the changerooms for the first time and having to pack heat.

Also amused by how unsurprised and blase Leonsis was, in stark counterpoint to the look of total amazement from Irene based on 30 years of accumulated bad experience. It looked like she was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The next few weeks should be fun.

As I have pointed out MANY times before, EVANS was picked BEFORE the Wiz would have had their turn. And as for the kid from Ariz State, OKC also drafted before the Wiz would have last year.

But, yeah we could have Curry on this team. That would have only meant that Wall and him would have to share playing time for years. Not a great help.

Sounds to me that if Les BouleS want to be savvy, they can use their large cap room and sign a nice free agent, and before that, package Gilby and the pick for a sign and trade for one of the megastars that are going to be FA's this summer.

John Wall is no guarantee of playoff glory, while doing a sign and trade for a known NBA commodity might hasten playoff success.

A) Why ya gotta pick on Googs? He was a solid player. Who exactly who was taken after him would you rather have had?

B) Um, we don't have the same owner, team president, GM, or coach in place as when either of those other two were drafted.

C) Gilbert was signed before his injuries became chronic and before his arrest. Teams aren't exactly knocking down our door to trade for him at the moment.

D) Why ya gotta pick on Googs?

ok...so here is a thought.

Obviously we pick John Wall.
Turn right around and trade Arenas to the Cavs in a sign and trade for Lebron. By doing a sign and trade we STILL have salary cap space!

Use the later Cavs first and early second round pick on F/C.

Get our new Head coach, Calipari!

Work our BUTT off on getting Chris Bosh with a max contract.

Roster IMMEDIATELY transformed.

Wall
L James
Blatche
McGee
Bosh

Would be a VERY IMPRESSIVE start to the Leonsis era with the 'Zards!

This makes the wizards look a lot more attractive to one of the max players available. Perhaps mello, why? Because I dont think he believes he will ever reach the finals playing in the west. And he is a baltimore kid. Now if you get mello and draft wall or turner will other want to come here? We will have blatche, McGee, GA, Livinston, Howard, Turner or Wall, get Mello. Thats a team another star player will want to come to.

Here people, read and learn:

Wall was indeed part of a gifted Kentucky team, but his talent stood out above that of his teammates. Wall's exceptional speed at the point from one end to the other differentiates him from other point guards. His 6-4 frame allows him to elevate and finish. His ballhandling is not an issue. If there was a point of contention with Wall it's his outside shooting. Wall led the Wildcats with 16.6 points a game but shot 32.5 percent on 3-pointers.

Evan Turner. He's NBA ready. Wall, for all the talent in the world, dosen't have a jump shot. Since that's the case, many will compare him to Rondo from the Celtics. He too doesn't have a jump shot either. However, the difference between the two is that Rondo can rebound and is physically stronger. Remember the triple-double he pulled off against Cleveland--even without the aforementioned jumpshot. The Wizards need someone from the three position who has multiple skill sets that cause problems for opposing defenses, and Evan Turner fills the bill. He's 6'7", physically stronger, can handle the rock and has a mid-range jumper, which you need to succeed in the NBA.

Go with Evan Turner.

Ok guys, I use to try not to feed into the whole David Stern controlling the playoffs conspiracy theory but I am wathing the game and I am telling you that he is determined to make the finals between LA and Boston. Game one between boston and orlando they allowed boston to play rough without any calls and tonight they are calling fantom fouls on orlando and issued a tech to carter for making an expression to the replay. I think stern is controlling the playoffs for profit through the refs. He lost money on all those 4-0 sweeps and now he is trying to make it up by creating the most atractive finals rating wise he can. He does not want another Lakers vs Magic, he does not want a Phoenix vs Celtics and he definately does not want a Phoenix vs Magic series. He wants Lakers vs Boston and it shows in how the games are being officiated. Its helping the lakers and celtics, and I say this as a lakers fan.

This is what i think we should do. Draft John Wall. Trade Gilbert for Amare stoudemire or to get Demarcus Cousins somehow get the cap to work. because we need a strong big man, Mcgee can come off the bench as center. Get rid of Ross, Jackson, Crittenton, Boykins, Martin, and Oberto. I made a depth chart of what i wish would happen but its on Excel. Our starters from 1 to 5 should be John Wall, Nick Young, Al Thorton, Andray Blatche, and Stoudemire (or Cousins). Randy Foye should play behind wall and livingston after him. Miller can back up at the 2 and 3 positions. And Singleton proved himself to play good minutes behind Blatche. Then we should Trade Josh howard and 30th pick to pick up gordon hayward. And lastly draft greivis vasquez as our second round pick

And if he is as good as Callipari's other point guards then he is worth the pick. We just got rid of a swing man, although I think turner will be special too. Though a healthy gilbert and Howard can make up for not picking turner. And it will be nice to have Wall and Livingston. My apologies to the poster that I gave a hard time to earlier. You can't take Turner over Wall because of fit. Turner isn't that athletic and his ceiling is much lower.Wall has great athleticism has the potential to be one of the best players in the league not just pg's. He works hard and create tempo with the athletic team the Wizards are building.

NO choosing someone else because we 'already have' Gil at point guard. Gil has never been a good PG... it's just that when he was dominating offensively before multiple knee surgeries no one cared. His statistics at the position may have been good before the suspension, but anyone who has played b-ball past the third grade could see that he was ponderous with the ball, dribbling too much, looking for his shot too frequently and wasting precious shot clock figuring out how he could get back on the cover of NBA Live. His drives were ill-advised and he no longer had the speed to collapse the defense. Even if he did, never in his career has he exhibited an inclination to kick it back out. He had so many assists because the ball was always in his hands, with every possession resulting in either a GA shot or assist... or turnover/missed shot. We have sacrificed too much for Gil already... lost seasons, teamwork, potential, the maturity of young players due to the poor example he has set, not to mention national embarrassment. No more. We take the best pick, period, and Wall is it. Let Gil go... for nothing if need be. This team has new ownership, the number one pick and the opportunity to bury its past. Do the right thing Leonsis and Irene, thanks!

There is no "fit" Fit implies that there are other set pieces in place around the open spot you need someone to "fit" into. There no pieces set in place on this team. There's not a single player on the roster who's so good that the Wizards can't conceivably get a better on in the draft or FA. Not a single one.

Agreed. Drafts are for developing talent (see: OKC) not for turning around the franchise in a year.

You draft talent, not need.

Also. Arenas is 28. Wall is 19. Arenas has four more years on his contract (no telling how long on his knee, although I hope he'll be solid.) So trade Arenas near the end of his contract when Wall has had time to develop and can legally drink he can take over all-star duties.

Also. Do I really have to be the one to say it? Really?

Fine.

When the fan threw the ball back to him he motioned to have the fan disaplined. But he was the one who over reacted to the fan in the first place. Joe Derosa should not be doing these games. He is letting his emotions get the best of him if he lets a fan ge under his skin. Remember Tim Donehey. These guys are refs not priest. Then again thats may not be a good analogy these days. Are you one of those fans who call for a house cleaning during the off season and then when they can win a game the next season call for the firing of the coach, the GM and call for the owner to sell the team when they win 20 games due to lack of talent? Because you cant stand the current team and dont have the fan patience to deal with a young team rebuilding. You know what you call teams who gut their teams every two seasons. The los angeles clippers.

Wall is the potential franchise player the Wiz need to build around and will make it even easier to trade Arenas. Turner may be more NBA ready but a great swingman is not as important as as All-Star PG.

Carter and howard have four fouls. Perkins have four fouls. Orlando needs to have someone else step up because the refs already know who they need to take out of the game to control the outcome. Vince and Howard. And stop depending on Howard posting up as your first offensive weapon. Where is Lewis? Where is Peitris? JJ Reddick should not be your best scorer or the magic will not only loose the series they will ge swept.

Nobody wants Howard at $11 million a year. Obviously the Wiz would bring him back at the MLE.

He can bring more to the team at this point than a gun-shy Mike Miller who can't defend NBA 2's and most 3's.

About Wall's jump shot: he does have one. Connected on 32.5% of his 3 point attempts -- nothing great, but significantly better than, say, Tyreke Evans as a college frosh. And the college arc is a little farther back than it used to be.

Everyone on here should read this, it's one of the best articles I have read on Wall:

http://www.nbadraft.net/content/will-john-wall-equal-or-surpass-derrick-rose

Will John Wall equal or surpass Derrick Rose?

"But these are two different players. Wall dominates with his speed. Rarely can one find a player who operates at such a high level while running at full speed. No one can catch this kid on a break, and he may instantly become the fastest player in the NBA, at least with the ball. More impressive, he keeps his peripheral vision broad and is a brilliant passer in the open court."

Easy, read the linky I posted a few spots above.

Pure PG is someone who looks to make plays through his team mates first, shoots second aka Jason Kidd.

Wall can do that AND also create his own shots if he needs to. The only other player the Wiz have had in recent years that can create a shot is Gil, but Gil looks to himself first then others second.

Magic even said at half-time the Wiz have no choice but to draft Wall, he's that good.

Foye and Boykins are PGs, Livingston is more of a pure PG. Court vision, instincts, passing ability, anticipation, floor leadership, unselfishness, situational awareness.

A PG gets the ball to the open man for a shot. The pure PG anticipates who is going to be open, gets the ball to him in a spot where he likes to score from and delivers the pass in a way that makes it easier for the player to score.

Magic, Kidd, Stockton, Nash

Not saying Wall is that good, just saying he has shown more of those abilities than Rose. He is supposed to have excellent court vision and be unselfish.

If the ref Derosa does not get pulled from the playoffs then Stern loses all credibility. That guy is definately in his personal feelings and can be influenced. He allowed a heckling fan to get him out of his square. He threw the ball to him as the fan was heckling him. Then tried to get security to go after the fan after he passed the ball back to him. Whats up with that? There is no place in an NBA playoff game for that. This is starting to look like WWE. Planned.

Anyone picking Evan Turner over John Wall probably would have also selected Emeka Okafor over Dwight Howard.

-more NBA-ready
-doesn't have to develop
-has won some stuff

Whatever. People comparing Wall/Evans stats are missing it.

Look at what Evans was doing when he was a FRESHMAN...THEN look at what Wall did this year.

The think I can give boston is that they dont have just one guy that can carry them. Even the lakers need Kobe to carry them, regardless of Gasol or any of the lakers. If Pierce is off, Rondo may be on, if Garnett is off, Big baby may step it up, if Allen is off the again Rondo may make up for it, or tody allen. The lakers will have to match that depth and versitility. With all my complaining about the refs, Boston with Garnett, an improved Allen, and Wallace are better than they were a year ago and orlando needed seven games to beat them without those guys. Plus Doc is a better coach than stan.

Wall sounds like a good kid. Talked about how he probably wouldn't have jumped straight from high-school (even if he could have) b/c he knows he needed some maturing (not sure how true that is, but it sounds good). Finished his year at Kentucky with a 3.5 GPA.

Doesn't seem like a knuckle-head.

Someone describe Rondo. I say he has Allen Iversons physical attributes, long arms, big hands and jumping ability, athleticism. But I cant find the player he compares with in regards to the way he plays. I would say Joe Dumars or Isaiah but his jumper isn't no where near as pure. But he is just as smart. Is he Nate Archebald? Tony Parker? I got it. He has the physical attributes of AI and the smarts of Chancey Billups without the pure pull up jump shot of them both. I guess he is his own man. Someone help me with this.

John Walls by default. As much as I love Gil, you will have to trade him. I think he need a fresh start elsewhere and with John Walls, you got players that can run the floor (McGee, Blatche, Young, all can run). Gil cant run like he used to.

Posted by: demonj21 | May 19, 2010 12:06 AM | Report abuse

I still stand by what Ive been saying. You take Turner. Gil will be good in the new system and he should be healthier. Plus, I think Turner will bring some added character to this team. Have you guys seen Wall in HS & College? Im sure that all of you who love him will soon be also ripping him for showing off or getting in some kind of trouble. You dont have those worries at all with Turner and we need that on this roster.

The also other huge thing that everyone is overlooking. What about Livingston? If we keep him then we definitely dont need another PG. Look, I wont be upset if we get Wall. I think it could work with the new Offense since both guard spots are pretty equal now but I think we are a better overall team with Turner. I think the #1 thing you have to do is to watch Gil in the offseason and I mean really really watch him. If he looks great then you take Turner. If he looks like he's still favoring the knee or hasnt gained back any of that quick step or leaping ability then you take Wall

Hello fellow Wizards fans. I checked out months ago and thought I'd reconnect after the lottery. And wow what a surprise!

The big question now is what free agents want to come here? With this pick (probably Wall), Gil and an improved Blatche where does it put us on the "scale of attractiveness?" I am imagining help up front: a Boozer, Stoudemire or a Lee. Lebron? I would hate to have to root for him. Wade? if he is at all ineredstd you jump ast it and adjust the roster accordingly. Bosh? maybe. But I wish he rebounded better. Joe Johnson? No, let him pass. Gil and Wall and what we have is sufficient in the backcourt.

Essentially I think we need to get help up front unless a Wade wants to come here.
Wow...it is exciting to be sitting here imagining what the new look Wizards will look like!

The draft is in a month. Even though Gil has been working out, he hasn't played serious competitive basketball since he was suspended. I'm not sure we can find out anything in a month that would make or break the decision either way. What we also know is that most of us were not satisfied with the way Gil played even at his healthiest.

Free Agency opens after the draft, so we won't know until after the draft if Livingston will be here or not. They might have an idea if he will or won't, but that could change depending on how much money someone else offers him.

Has Wall gotten in any trouble to date? It's a serious question, I haven't read anything about character flags, but I haven't looked at everything about him yet.

Anyone banking the future of the Wiz on Gilbert Arenas is a total moron. Even at 110% GA is a one-dimensional combo guard who doesn't have a real position and is the worst defender of all the starting guards in the NBA.

Haven't we had enough of this Gilbert Arenas nonsense? We'll work with him if we have to for another year or 2, but if your plan is to pass on rebuilding around Wall b/c you like Gilbert, then you need to be tarred and feathered in the street.

If the Wizards take Turner then this remains Gil's team. Try out Wall and Gil for a year and see what happens. If it doesn't work out the Wizards can see what options they have under a new CBA. With the last agreement I believe teams were able to dump a contract without it counting towards the luxury tax. That or something better like reducing the length of current contracts should be available after the new agreement.

So what's the difference between a 'pure' PG and a 'really really good' PG?

Posted by: Samson151

Court vision, instincts, passing ability, anticipation, floor leadership, unselfishness, situational awareness. =)

It's not a question of good PG vs pure PG. Steve Blake is more of a pure PG. It doesn't mean he's great.

The traditional scale is more from 'scoring' PG to 'pure' PG. It has partly to do with what the focus of the player is, individual first or team first.

Gilbert and Iverson are good recent examples of scoring PGs. They can set up their teammates and rack up assists, but a lot of what they do comes off of their ability to score. Guys I would call more 'pure' PGs like Steve Nash and Deron Williams can score, but they primarily look to set up their teammates, execute the offense, control the tempo, exploit mismatches, etc.

Both types can be effective. And most PGs in the NBA today are at best hybrids between the two. Billups is a good example of a player who started as more of a scoring point but has evolved into a 'purer' point and floor general.

But if I throw out the names Magic, Stockton, Nash, and Kidd and you don't immediately have a sense of the difference, it may be beyond explaining.

I wouldn't call us a favorite destination for any particular FA, but I think it's a little early to say we're already out of it for next year. If we draft Wall and if he plays close to as advertised (granted, neither is a certainty), we could move up a few rungs as a destination.

All these great pure point guards you guys are talking about, where are they? They're at home watching like the rest of us and dont say Rondo. Rondo is a great point guard but not a traditional point guard, he's a great defender and effort, heart player that is unique for a player his size playing with Garnett, Peirce and Allen.

I am in the Evan Turner camp although I love Wall as well and will be happy with either.

I get the Wall love, but for those of you who believe that Turner is not a franchise player are way off base in my opinion, the kid is a stud and is so versitle and athletic that he is a can' miss player in my opinion. (so is Wall)

How effective will Wall be in a half court set because he's not a good enough shooter at this point in his career but I suspect he will improve in this regard.

I'll take either but I'd prefer Turner, the next Branadon Roy.

Dosen't matter that we still have the coach and the GM and Gilbert.

Hell, we even have a new owner. So, we go from here. However, if we build it right, I agree with you it is more palatable to look at Durant or even Melo on down the line.

I would call Rondo a traditional point guard/pure ZXHOYA.

Rajon Rondo does all those things you would want in a pure point guard. He facilitates team play very well and he scores within the team offense well.

I don't see how you cannot call Rajon Rondo a pure/traditional point guard. If you heard Kenny Smith the other night talking about Rondo, he said a very key thing about Rondo's game.

He said that it doesn't matter rather Rondo's shot is off or he isn't grabbing rebounds, but one thing he always does is to keep the right tempo for his Team.

Keeping the right Tempo for your team is hugely important and a very good measure of an pure point guard.

Rondo's greatest strength is his defensive tenacity.

He is a great point guard, no doubt, but Boston is a complete team and Rondo is one of the key cogs of that team.

Very good point, but in two years and we never know how things will turn out, the Wizards may have a ton of money to land a top notch FA.

I wholly agree that OKC looks very promising right now, but as long as Kobe Bryant, and Melo, and Norwitski, and the Suns are out West, I think the Wizards would have a much better chance of getting to their conference finals than OKC.

Something as simple as that could change everthing and the decision making for a fellow stuck in Oklahoma City.

Also when Lebron bolts from Cleveland, then that is one less team in the east with serious championship considerations.

And that's even if he goes to a non-contending team now like NY, or NJ, or even Chicago for that matter.

For in the east now it looks like Orlando, Boston, and Miami, may be the only true contenders left, if Lebron bolts.
