Reports: Wizards vice president Tommy Sheppard passed over for Hornets job
Multiple news outlets are reporting that that the New Orleans Hornets and Dell Demps reached an agreement in principle late Tuesday night for Demps to become the next general manager. Wizards vice president of basketball administration Tommy Sheppard was among a handful of candidates who interviewed with Hornets president Hugh Weber last week in Las Vegas after the organization and Jeff Bower parted ways.
The Hornets now appear set on Demps, the San Antonio Spurs' vice president of basketball operations who also was a former Spurs teammate with new Hornets coach and Maryland native Monty Williams. Demps was also in consideration for a position with Phoenix, which is undergoing a transformation under the direction of new president of basketball operations and former D.C.-based player agent Lon Babby.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune also reported that the Hornets expected Demps to accept their offer. "I would be disappointed if we're not talking about [on Wednesday] a filled position,'' Weber said told the newspaper.
Sheppard has been a part of the Wizards' front office for the past seven seasons. He interviewed for the Seattle SuperSonics general manager vacancy in 2007 before Seattle eventually chose another former Spurs executive in Sam Presti. Former Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard, former Suns executive David Griffin and former Sacramento Kings assistant general manager Jason Levien were also interviewed for the Hornets job.
