Open thread: Wizards (10-26) at Timberwolves (9-30)

By Michael Lee

Andray Blatche will dress but is not expected to play against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday as the Wizards attempt to end their season long, road-losing streak. Blatche took some shots before the game, but he also attempted some left handed hooks, which may have signaled that this sprained right shoulder wasn't ready for a game. Coach Flip Saunders said Blatche was a "no-go. We'll keep him on the active list, but I don't think he'll be able to go...I think for sure, he'll be able to play on Saturday. It was encouraging he was able to get some shooting today, but it was a little too sore. Playing against [Minnesota forward Kevin] Love, you're going to get tangled up and that's probably going to put more pressure on that, too." Rashard Lewis will move over to power forward, with Al Thornton starting at small forward. Michael Beasley is out with a sprained left ankle.

Tipoff: 7 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: 106.7 FM.

The thing I want to see the most is can NY finally take his game on the road again and play well against a top notch defender in Brewer who has the size, athleticism, and length to make it miserable for an NY who looked dead tired at the end of last game

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 13, 2011 7:58 PM | Report abuse

since Thorton is starting and they have no Beasley, lets try to get up & down and run these boys out the gym. Wall & NY looked very tired late last game so hopefully they have enough to go uptempo

Man I hate Yi more then anything in the world. He's so soft and non chalant acting. Love is abusing him. Take him out and give Booker a look

Im starting to hate Al. He does so many dumb things sometimes. Nothing is worst then a dumb player

Ouch, J needs to work on that J... This is tough to watch already.

If I didnt have 1 single road win I would be so determined when I go out there the next game that nothing would stop me. I might lose but Im going to fight you tooth & nail. Instead we look so soft & non chalant like we're the best team in the league or have nothing to play for. That crap is embarrassing how a team could keep being like that. We'll probably make a run like we always do but we have to stop digging these holes that are so hard to come out of. We have so many weak minded players on our team. That crap gets so old

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 13, 2011 8:33 PM | Report abuse

I feel so bad that vets that have been on contenders like Shard & Kirk have to play with these guys. You can tell just by watching that they know the game so much more then all the rest of our guys

I asked this last game; What is Hilton Armstrong on this team for? Foul usage maybe because it certainly isn't for rebounds or for scoring. I can't stand this bust!

2 more years of this and no amount of money will keep Wall here...

Posted by: pentagon40 | January 13, 2011 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Wall kills us so much sometimes. He has to be better in the halfcourt. Also, why does Flip always let him have the ball for the end of quarter situations on isos. Either NY should have it on the iso or we should run a pick & roll. Wall isnt a good enough pure scorer and has no J. Worst of all Wall goes too fast every time.

Last game he did it and he did it again tonight. He always goes with like 7sec still left on the clock which always gives the other team the last possession. Gil always knew how to hold it until the last second to get off a shot. Wall shoots with like 4-7sec left every time. He's not our best guy in that situation. Either give it to NY on the iso or give Wall a screen so he can make a decision

Love hasnt done anything with Booker on him. Leave him in over Yi

What do you all think about Jordan Williams?

Seems he's not rated to be drafted high but I don't get it. He's got the tools physicaly, and I really like his game and the way he plays, and I think he'd be a great fit for what the Wizards need.

I mean 2nd round is no brainer, but I think I wouldnt mind if they took him high, not #1 but maybe top 10.

NY celebrating & laying his jersey down but then comes out on the road and stinks it up yet again. When your shot isnt falling you have to be able to do other things and all he does is shoot it up no matter what. Be smarter Nick

Yi is coming back in. this may be one of those games where its won or lost by Yi. He has to play well or else we will most likely lose. Sure enough he comes in with 2 lazy looking plays. People talk about Dray but Yi looks way lazier & softer. Dude looks like he doesnt even care right now. He has to step up. We still have a shot if he plays well down the stretch because its obvious that Flip is going to play him over Booker.

Right on Q, Yi gets abused again

Not even halfway thru the season...save your money and take the wife or gf out and have a good steak with the money Verizon would cost...

Posted by: pentagon40 | January 13, 2011 10:21 PM | Report abuse

This team has no mental toughness to win late, no will, the worst decision making coach in the league which always kills them in the pinch, and maybe worst of all they have no closer. Thats what they really need now. No one on the team is a closer.

The only guy really capable is NY and he just isnt quite smart enough to be able to do it. He has to be able to settle down, attack the rim at times, and get others involved if he's doubled. He's not ready for that and maybe never will. No one else on our roster has the ability to close right now, atleast not consistently

Great effort....for 3 and a half quarters. Down the stretch, bad play, bad shots, bad coaching, bad execution, no heart.

You could just watch them get tight down the stretch. Minnesota cranked up the pressure and the Wiz were unable to execute on either end.

When you blow a 21 pt lead and go into overtime to win against a club with one less win than you, nothing is a surprise, but tonite you saw a complete meltdown and it repeats itself over and over....Previous poster mentioned the team has no mental toughness, true, and no physical toughness to speak of....

the Wizards, who fell to 0-19 on the road. They are the only team in the NBA that has yet to win away from home this season.

The Timberwolves trailed by four with 5:46 to play, but closed the game with a 19-1 surge to snap a five-game losing streak.

Posted by: bulletsfan78 | January 13, 2011 10:46 PM | Report abuse

What you miss with those box scores bf78 is that Wall was incredibly reluctant to shoot the ball. He had open shots from behind the 3pt line and inside it that he passed on. He wasn't shooting, so Minnesota backed off of him and closed off his driving lanes.

Team loss, coaching included.

Flip doesnt like rooks, not many coaches do.

But yes, Booker should have been in there. He battled Love and showed energy when he was on floor

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2011 10:55 PM | Report abuse

They win if Wall had bothered to show up. That's very disappointing. And there was a point in the 4th where Wall and Lewis were playing hot potato with the ball, forcing Hinrich to shoot. WTF was that all about? This isn't the playoffs Rashard. Yi was pretty solid at C. That lineup with him, Booker, Young, Hinrich, and Wall is worth throwing out there again.

Posted by: divi3

No, it was very clearly on their minds. Most of the game, Minnesota went up, Washington would climb back in with concerted effort. K Love and Ellington hit those threes in the 4th and all of the sudden, the Wiz tried to get back all of those points back at once.

Plus, every team looks at the Wizards losing streak on the road and assumes no matter what happens, they have a chance. So they play with confidence added to the confidence teams already have playing at home. The Wizards have to work harder, execute better to overcome that.

As someone else said, the Wizards right now also lack a closer, someone to hit shots down the stretch. On the road, they don't have that person. Young may have learned from the master, but he hasn't learned that yet. Lewis and Young are the only viable candidates.

You should be happy though, div, they were so desperate, they went to McGee on the block down the stretch.

Posted by: ts35 | January 13, 2011 11:06 PM | Report abuse

I dont think it was. Those 2 inbounds errors were pure garbage, unfocused team that had barely shown up. Wiz werent winning that one unless Minny gave it to us.

Posted by: divi3 | January 13, 2011 11:09 PM | Report abuse

John Krawczynski of AP in the game story:

"Young looked completely uninterested against the Timberwolves. He scored a quiet seven points on 2 for 6 shooting in the first half, then spent the entire warmup period after halftime sitting in the fan seats courtside near the scorer's table."

Surprised to read something like that in the paper.

The criticisms are mainly that he's slow and lacks lateral mobility. He'll lose his size advantage in the pros and that's why the scouts are laying off him. Things could change...

Posted by: Samson151 | January 13, 2011 11:17 PM | Report abuse

You can't take Booker's minutes from Lewis, because Booker can't score, and imo Love is too big and too skilled for Booker. Yi played more mainly because of McGee's foul trouble. At 7'2" Darko is a touch matchup for anyone but McGee, Yi or Armstrong.

Love is averaging 20 and 15 for a reason. If he's going to go 5-6 from 3, it's going to be hard for anyone on the Wizards to slow him down. 14 for Darko bothers me, 16 and 9 for Ridnour bothers me a lot more.

What's up with John Wall passing up open looks in the 4th quarter. The T'Wolves were laying off him, giving him the room to take the jumpshot. Wall [and the Wiz] can't be successful if his only option is to drive to the hoop.

Yep, he needs an off-season to work on it. Give him a jump shot and he's twice as difficult to contain.
