Open thread: Wizards (12-29) vs. Celtics (33-9)

By Gene Wang

Washington plays the second of back-to-back games against the reigning Eastern Conference champions and will do so as injuries continue to mount. The latest is to guard Kirk Hinrich, who hyperextended his elbow in last night's 109-97 loss to Phoenix. The Wizards haven't had a home back-to-back set since November 2005, when they defeated the Seattle SuperSonics, 137-96, and the San Antonio Spurs, 110-95. Washington plays five straight sets of back-to-back games between now and Feb. 5.

Let the conversation begin in the thread below. You can also join the conversation on Twitter with Michael Lee (@MrMichaelLee) and Gene Wang (@gene_wang). See your tweets here by using #wizards.

Tipoff: 7 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: 106.7 FM.

Check out a live box score from tonight's game here.

Wasn't awesome when we could beat teams 137-96

Are we really just going to look at Allen and Pierce when they're wide open behind the arc?

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Also, running iso for blatche just so he can shoot a low percentabe jumper has got to stop.

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Already.

THAT'S what I'm talking about. Just LOOKING at Paul Pierce in the corner wide open. Even Paul was like "Really? Nobody is coming?"

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 7:19 PM | Report abuse

John Wall and Blatche with a couple picks to LAC for Blake Griffin. Come on...WE HAVE MUSTAFA SHAKUR.

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 7:42 PM | Report abuse

I know I've said it before but I REALLY like what Seraphin brings when he gets in the game.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I think John Wall can learn something about playing the point from Shakur, if he keeps playing like this.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 22, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

This is like Georgetown vs. Bethune-Cookman.

A Division I vs. Division II contest.

Posted by: SteveMG | January 22, 2011 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I like Shakur -- never heard of him before, but he is certainly making a positive impression.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 22, 2011 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Wow, I'm here at the Boston Garden watching the Wiz play the Celtics! It might as well be, unbelievable! I've personally never been to a home game that had more of the opponents fans than the home team, by a large margin!

Posted by: zxhoya | January 22, 2011 7:48 PM | Report abuse

My biggest issue with them on offense is that they seem like they say to themselves "Okay it's my turn...I'm getting a shot now. No matter what it takes."

Mainly with JaVale, Nick and definitely Dray.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 7:57 PM | Report abuse

I've been to some games this year. Against the Heat, Magic, Bulls and there were tons of their fans. It's a damn shame.

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Andre just can't let it go, KG loves messing with his head.

Posted by: zxhoya | January 22, 2011 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Amazing how the good teams expose truly weak players...For some reason Nick Young is over rated...sure he scores in double figures but when it comes to playing against good teams consistently, his true skills come out...same for Blatche...finally scored some points and what does he do??? Silly foul against Garnett..Looked like a high school player....

This game was lost early in the first period....

That's because DC has terrible fans in general.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

I agree. The Skins fanbase is pretty solid. Washingtonians only claim to be Wiz or Caps fans when they're doing well it seems.

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 8:07 PM | Report abuse

LOL go ahead and put Al Thornton on that list too.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Redskins have a good fanbase..but they only show up when they're doing good too. Remember that Steeler game last year? They're good for selling those tickets. Even when the Wizards were good the atmosphere sucked a lot. Maybe because of the type of city DC is.

Comment in today's WP by Flip on Phoenix game: "First time ever I had 3 guys, with 4 minutes left in the first quarter asked to come out, because they were tired."

Think it would have been better if Flip hadn't made that statement as it reflects on him directly...Why were they so tired and after only 8 minutes played????

The clock is ticking on Flip I do believe...the All-Star break might be his break...

I guess year after year of losing wears on you. There is so much you can do in this area entertainment wise that we are not feverish about bad teams, but are still fans.

Posted by: zxhoya | January 22, 2011 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Well, you can't have a much worse half than that one. Hard to believe Nick Young won't heat up in the third period.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 22, 2011 8:29 PM | Report abuse

They're completely dictating where Nick goes. I think it's throwing him off a lot. Hopefully he figures it out.

It just gets crazier around here.

Your guess is as good as mine. But you sure notice the difference when you go to a Ravens game. Orioles not so much anymore.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 22, 2011 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Nah...it's not even about losing. It's just not a city of rabid fans in general. It's more of a social event. That's just how it feels to me.

I mean...it is the coaches responsibility to run them and to condition them. They also have to put in work in the offseason but in the middle of the season its on flip and the coaching staff.

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Good to see Nick attacking the basket off those screens. Adjusting to the defense...nice.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 8:36 PM | Report abuse

I hate when McGee becomes a point guard.

Posted by: bullwiz81 | January 22, 2011 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: pentagon40 | January 22, 2011 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 8:44 PM | Report abuse

33 years of being the Clippers of the east will do that to a fanbase.

Back when Joe Gibbs was winning Super Bowls and even when George Allen was the coach fans supported the Redskins.

Posted by: bulletsfan78 | January 22, 2011 8:44 PM | Report abuse

They've played what, 40 games? If they're not in condition by now, you think more running will help?

I think Flip's point was, suck it up and play, dammit.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 22, 2011 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Loving the intesity right now.

It's easy to support a team that's winning super bowls...but those type of people aren't usually fans that contribute to a real atmosphere at the games.

Did Flip call a time-out that nobody will listen to him in for you?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Big shots from Dray and Nick. Bout time they had some shots fall

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | January 22, 2011 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Wizards don't know how to get a good shot when they need to. First, Trevor Booker takes a long jumper then Al Thornton dribbles into the thick of the defense and gets stripped. This is where a good coach calls a set play to counteract the current "hope for the best" offense.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 22, 2011 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Okay JaVale!

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 9:16 PM | Report abuse

THATS why you have McGee in at crunch time!........... Even though he did just give up like 4 offensive rebounds.

If they could've closed out Miami and D12 hadn't got that tip-in...

Wins over Boston, Miami and Orlando would make this season even more comical.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 22, 2011 9:44 PM | Report abuse

They got off to an awful start, but that sure didn't look like a dispirited Wiz team out there tonight.

Looks like New Orleans is drubbing the Spurs and Charlotte went down hard at home...

Can anyone explain to me: how did that just happen?

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | January 22, 2011 10:57 PM | Report abuse

The Key: NO Kirk in the 4th quarter so Flip had to play a traditional line-up. Also more Cartier Martin. Is crazy because this team is really not as bad as it's record.

Posted by: lemekdivine | January 22, 2011 11:03 PM | Report abuse

Young 13 FG attempts
Wall 12 FG attempts
McGee 11 FG attempts
Lewis 13 FG attempts
Blatche 12 FG attempts

That's even shot distribution.

When was the last time that a Wizard team failed to have at least one player with 14+ shot attempts?

Posted by: JPRS | January 22, 2011 11:34 PM | Report abuse

Nice win WIZ fans. Suddenly it's getting harder for me to want EG's and FLIP's heads served up on a plate, but there's always Monday.

RASHARD LEWIS has brought some needed savvy to the front-court, without the poison normally associated with him. His play seems to say he's happy for the moment. Man, he's turning into a real gift what with ARENAS" contract gone. I'm almost ready to call our gm, HARRY HOUDINI.

And now we have a potential up and comer [SHAKUR] at back-up pg something I've been ranting about since we re-signed LESTER HUDSON. Thank goodness he's gone.

Let's go into the draft and get someone to share the load with McGEE at the five then put HILTON ARMSTRONG deep on the bench where he belongs.

Posted by: glawrence007 | January 22, 2011 11:40 PM | Report abuse

Say don't we have two expiring options? Let's use them, our first pick, and JIANLIAN to get the co-starter at five now.

A very good win for a team that badly needed one. All the more impressive with Nick Young having an off-night shooting. We got a bit of luck with both O'Neals out but still, beating Boston in a low-scoring game, particularly when you let them get up so quickly in the first half -- that's something to be proud of.

I think we've established that nobody's mind gets changed about anything here at WI. I'm sure it won't be long before the gang is back at it. But it's refreshing to see some good basketball played in Washington DC.

Posted by: bulletsfan78

18pts, 11 rebs. Tonight he might actually deserve some of it.

The credit tonight should go to....the Celtics. For many reasons, the Wizards get up to play the Celts. Dray does not like KG, and after getting into it with him early, he played as hard on D as I have seen from him in a long time.

Great game to watch. I liked the slightly extended taste of Seraphin we got tonight, and I think he has earned some of the backup minutes tonight behind McGee. I say again that he has the best defensive footwork among the bigs. I remember divi referencing that the team calls him Big Slow. But he doesn't look slow out there to me. He moves laterally very well, especially for a guy his size. He shows well on screens and then recovers to his man and boxes out. On the offensive end, he is still raw, but I like that he keeps it very simple.

McGee and Blatche both played hard tonight and gave great physical effort on both ends. Lewis stopped totally trying to bomb away from 3. Young had a tough, tough night on offense, but full credit to him, he played hard all night long and fought for some tough rebounds. He also had the sweet -oop dish to McGee. Given how much attention he draws, if he adds a bit more passing to his game (it seems like he has started to) it makes him even tougher to deal with.

And after a few games of being passive on O, Wall ramped it up a bit tonight.

I was at the game tonight, but hadn't been able to check up on the latest news, so one of my first thoughts was....when did we pick-up Mustafa Shakur? He played well tonight. Some nice set-ups for other players and good defense.

All in all a very solid win. Great effort. Now, they just have to take the act on the road.
