Open thread: Wizards (13-30) vs. Nuggets (25-18)

By Gene Wang

Washington is at Verizon Center for the second game of a second straight back-to-back series following last night's 115-106 loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. This is the Wizards' only home game during a stretch that includes five on the road, where Washington fell to 0-21 and is in danger of matching the NBA record for road futility to start a season (0-29). The Wizards have been more than respectable at home, where they are 13-9, including Saturday's 85-83 victory over Eastern Conference champion Boston.

Let the conversation begin in the thread below. You can also join the conversation on Twitter with Michael Lee (@MrMichaelLee) and Gene Wang (@gene_wang). See your tweets here by using #wizards.

Tipoff: 7 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: 106.7 FM.

Check out a live box score from tonight's game here.

this is another one of those Andray Blatche games. He killed them last year. If he plays well then we can win. If he sucks then we probably lose and maybe get embarrassed. Either way, Im guessing after Flip watched the film last night, he wont allow Dray to stay on the floor with such a crappy effort.

I wont completely go full bore on him like others did because there were some games when he showed up and others didnt and I also think over the course of the season there are going to be 1 or 2 games where you are just dead and cant do anything or even move for that matter. After all, we have played alot of games lately seemingly.

With that being said, Dray doesnt deserve to get the benefit of doubt in any situation so he better make amends for it tonight or he should be limited to 15min or less

Let's see, Denver's opening a 5 game road trip. They're 20-5 at home, 5-13 on the road. After DC they go to Detroit, Cleveland, Philly, and NJ. You can see they're hoping to get well against that lineup.

The Nugs have won 6 of the last 7 against the Wiz. By the way, they apparently turned down a Carmelo trade that involved Landry Fields, Wilson Chandler, and Eddy Curry's expiring contract.

Remember those Power Balance bracelets the NBA players are wearing?

The sad part about the Wiz situation now is that NO ONE wants to be the first team to give the Wiz their first road victory...so there is not only pressure on the Wiz but other teams as well...

Will be interesting to see how the Wiz play tonite at HOME.....

This is the game for NY to show that he's not "JR Smith Deaux" like all the fans from other teams call him. They still think he's just a no defense dummy gunner who has horrible shot selection and no good team would want him. They all hate his game because they still think he's the same guy. NY is not that guy for the most part anymore but at times he still shows flashes of being an idiot. Tonight against Jr Smith is when he should show the difference between them

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 25, 2011 7:11 PM | Report abuse

I said they compare NY to JR Smith but I forgot Al Harrington is on this team and thats who alot of fans of other teams also compare Dray to. They say he's just another stat padding bum like Al with a low IQ, no defense, and you cant win with him. Dray has to seperate himself from that in this game

IDK about this lineup Flip has in. It better workout. Now he brings NY back in though

Shakur is my new favorite Wiz player. I hope he sticks around for a while.

How many 3 pointers must Denver's guards make before someone guards them?

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 25, 2011 7:55 PM | Report abuse

You can really see the difference in this game, Denver actually showing some team play while Wiz seem to shoot at will, the 1st player with the ball across the mid court line shoots. All one on one play, I don't get it, watched the same thing 7 times in a row with exception of once. Wow, makes me really wanna run for one of those Wizard Fun Packs!

@zack9633,

I observed the same. The Wiz offense looks like they rely primarily on iso's -- nothing resembling a coordinated offensive strategy.

Seraphin was basically ineffective last night, which isnt a big deal as he is a rookie. However I am not sold on waiting 3yrs to develop the shortest Center in the nba...hopefully management is flexible about where he plays. With Booker as well, would like to see him get some burn at 3 on occasion.

Geez, considering one of the most storied players in franchise history was a 6'7" PF/C, you'd think you'd cut the Big Serf some slack.

Players you decide to like, you love, but it seems like a player has no shot of getting out of your doghouse. Even though he's barely stepped on the court.

And btw, Chuck Hayes is 6'6". As far as I know, he's the shortest C who gets regular time.

Is John Wall hurt? Ty Lawson is blowing by him like John has bricks for sneakers.

Reason Denver is leading by 12 at the half:

FTs: Den 18-21 Wiz 10-11
3 point shots: Den 6-9 Wiz 0-4

Otherwise the numbers at least are about even.

It's not just fans of other teams.

Posted by: kalo_rama | January 25, 2011 8:25 PM | Report abuse

is someone going to rip Lewis the way they were ripping Dray yesterday because he's costing us this game

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 25, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

we looked like we couldve made a run until we stopped Denver on that one possesion but 1 big man in Dray takes off to the other end before the rebound is secured while the other big man in McGee tries again to secure it with one hand and lets Nene take it from him and lays it in. Changed the whole complextion of the game and it will be hard to get it back right.

Meanwhile Flip's system still sucks as Dray mostly catches the ball on the perimiter after setting a screen or from a pick & pop while NY cant get to the rim off the curl because the lane is closed and you can easily see it coming, and Wall? Well, you already know how I feel about the Wall thing

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 25, 2011 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Denver's D is easily bad enough to let us back in it if we want it but the question is do we want it?

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 25, 2011 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Dray is just clearly fatter & slower after the injury. Thats why he needs to just flat out stop all the extra ball handling. He's too fat & slow which is also throwing off his timing. Save that for next year. For now just back dudes down like you did on the very 1st play. If you must dribble then keep it simple and do one move & go or a jab step & go, like Melo had to learn.

Stop trying to AI cross guys because its not going to work but people are foolish if they dont see his talent. Trade him if you want but with that offseason he's going to kill next year when he's quicker and in better shape

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 25, 2011 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see Andray and Nick make a habit of initiating contact on their drives to the rim instead of shying away from it. They often get to the rim and "dipsy doo" to avoid contact when they may be better served trying to absorb the contact and get a three point play or foul call. They miss a fair number of shots improvising their way around opposing players at the rim.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 25, 2011 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Some opposing player always seems to exceed his scoring average against the Wiz. What gives?

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 25, 2011 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Why does it always have to be some annoying bit player from the other team that kills us? Al Harrington? Really?

And by the way, Mr. Wall, if the only way you can get a shot off on a drive is to dive parallel to the floor, attempt to wing it up to the rim, and then crash to the floor, it's not a good shot.

Posted by: ts35 | January 25, 2011 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Got called away for the second half but just from the box score it looks like a replay of the first. The Wiz have the edge in FGs and have closed the gap in FTs, while losing the 3 point battle 12 to 2.

Maybe this is why need to play defense...

Get out that water buffalo and the lion tape. Maybe run it in 3-D?

If these were buffaloes instead of basketball players, it'd be a mighty thin herd.

Seems like almost all of Denver's makes were on 3s or in the paint. Nene looked really good. He might end up having more trade value for them than Melo.

John may be hurt, but Ty Lawson is every bit as fast as John Wall. However, he wasn't worthy of any of our draft picks.

Unfortunate (at best) for EG that 2009 is turning out to be one of the deeper draft classes recently.

That's not true at all, Keveen is not in any doghouse of mine. I like all the effort and toughness he displays and think he should play every night for sure. But IMHO it's unrealistic to think he should be a full-time C...he's just not big enough. And no more Nene comparisons, please. Hilario is bigger, stronger, taller, and more skilled- Seraphin is not going to be Nene.

Posted by: divi3 | January 25, 2011 11:59 PM | Report abuse

Other thing about Denver's game -- Billups led the team with just 6 assists. Lawson, supposedly a point guard, had 2, and I believe both came in the second half.

Al Harrington is actually a pretty good 3 point shooter, although I don't know if he's ever gone 6 for 8 before.

IMO a good object lesson in why we can't try to outscore teams. We're just not good enough offensively.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 26, 2011 12:00 AM | Report abuse

Y'know, I haven't seen any Combine measurements for either Nene or Seraphin. No weight or jumping measures, either. I see Nene is listed as 6'11" and 260, which means he could be anywhere from 6'9" up. I sure don't see any objective basis for concluding he's stronger than Seraphin, but hey, somebody prove me wrong.

I hate to think we'd base an opinion of some player's potential on one fan's opinion, repeated over and over on WI. Facts, please.
