Open thread: Wizards (13-31) at Thunder (29-16)

By Michael Lee

The Wizards will be shorthanded as they attempt to snap a 22-game road losing streak dating back to last season. JaVale McGee did not make the trip to Oklahoma City and is not with the team as he deals with the flu. McGee missed practice on Thursday and attempted to make the flight but got sick on the team plane and was sent back home. Coach Flip Saunders said the Wizards hope that McGee is able to join the team in Memphis on Saturday. Trevor Booker will start in place of McGee, with Andray Blatche moving over to center and Rashard Lewis at power forward. The Wizards (13-31) have never won in four games in Oklahoma City, including the time when the New Orleans Hornets played here after Hurricane Katrina. Kirk Hinrich (right elbow) is also out. "Undermanned, losing streak, never won here," Saunders said. "Everything is pointing our way."

Let the conversation begin in the thread below. You can also join the conversation on Twitter with Michael Lee (@MrMichaelLee) and Gene Wang (@gene_wang). See your tweets here by using #wizards.

Tipoff: 7 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: 106.7 FM.

I know it's early and the test is in the 4th if it's close...but I like the energy so far.

What's up SDMDTSU? 1st road victory tonight, you think?

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 8:22 PM | Report abuse

The scouting report on Wall is pretty obvious.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Man those Dray fouls suck. He looked like he was moving real well in that early going and had alot of energy. Then him at the 5, I bet that Kristic and no one else could guard him. Maybe Ibaka some but still.

I also hate it when some coaches take guys out with 2 fouls no matter what. Flip always does that and it makes me sick. He takes out guys even when there hot. If a guy is a vet, you can try to trust him sometimes. Im not saying this was the time to do it since it was so early but I just have never agreed with coaches always benching guys no matter what just because a couple of fouls.

JVG says the same and I agree. Flip is so consistent that everytime our guys get 2 fouls or whatever, they instantly start walking to the bench. Like they just know Flip is going to pull them like he always does. Dray was a fool for both fouls though. Stay on your feet on D. You cant get that quick foul. Then the 2nd one you have to let Westbrook go when you have a foul already. I like the fact that he was trying to challange stuff though.

Again, he looked like he had alot more energy & effort tonight so it sucks. I hope he still has it going when he gets back in but you never know if that may have killed the momentum or not

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Everyone looks like they have energy tonight. These guys definitely came to win. Hope they can keep it up all night and not die after the 1st or end the 2nd half

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:31 PM | Report abuse

What a coincedence. Lewis holds a pick insteads of leaving early and Wall blows right by just like Westbrook does. Hold the picks and Wall will live in the lane and we will be a different team. No responses about Lewis know how to set screens better then the other guys either.....lol

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:36 PM | Report abuse

@bazookajoe

Too early to tell...they gotta keep this up but they're looking good. They seem to play goood teams pretty well so we'll see.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Ib"l"aka turning the rookies away tonight...lol

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:42 PM | Report abuse

"Lewis holds a pick insteads of leaving early and Wall blows right by just like Westbrook does. Hold the picks and Wall will live in the lane and we will be a different team."

Some of that is Wall, too. He hasn't been 'crisp' in his routes around the pick -- I recall someone bringing this up earlier in the season. Compare him to some of the elite guards and the difference is apparent.

But yes, if the play is run correctly, I don't think anybody can stay with him.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 28, 2011 8:45 PM | Report abuse

leave Dray in Flip! Nevermind, I knew that was coming. Al "idiot" Thorton losing the best player on the planet somehow

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Might need to get Dray back in but its going to be hard with him at the 5 because our D will suck with him not wanting to get fouls but its not like we are stopping them now anywyas. Hold off a little longer and then get him in if they keep this run up. We have nothing to lose. Need to play to win

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Man our pick game looks mad good tonight. Set them right and Wall lives in the lane for layup attempts or open dishes

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 8:56 PM | Report abuse

NY is like 20% good, 80% suck tonight. He needs to stop hogging it like he is Durant or someone. Half if his shots are contested leaning shots. Stop taking that crap if youre not on

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Dont save Dray Flip. 3min more wont help any. Dont let us get down 10 at the half just to say you saved Dray those last 3min. Hopefully we step up because I know Flip wont put Dray in

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:03 PM | Report abuse

D might suck in the 3rd with dray in and being well aware of his 3 fouls but the good thing is that he had mad energy and with the little he played in the 1st half, he will probably play just about the whole 2nd half. I could see Flip making him the go to guy which I think he was ready for early but his momentum may be broken now so hopefully they dont force it to him and he stinks it up.

However, if he can just play at the level he was, Wall still look quick, Lewis knocks down the open shot, and if NY finds any rythm then we could very well be in it. Will be extremely tough though. They got that great loud crowd going and RW & Durant seems like they are refusing to be the one's to give us a 1 in the road win column

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Well, so far it's been your basic road game, with OKC doubling the Wiz in FT attempts and points of FTs. That leaves Washington on the edge of foul trouble as well. Let's hope we get through it...

Posted by: Samson151 | January 28, 2011 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Yeah it's damn near impossible to win a game when you give up that many free throws. Even when you keep turnovers low and shoot at a good clip.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Nick is REALLY pressing out there...

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 9:33 PM | Report abuse

our 2 big guns in Dray & NY come out sucking. They have to turn it up if we want to win. I still dont think Flip shouldve sat Dray that much in the 1st half. Let guys see if they can play with fouls sometimes, espically when they are playning well. Dont kill the momentum of guys playing great

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Thats right Flip. Play through Dray. He's getting it back like he had it in the 1st. He can carry us this half if he's right. This Booker-Dray lineup is starting to look real good too. Not many 5's can stay with Dray if he's motivated. Then Booker has that hustle defensive style but can score also. Not a bad lineup. McGee may have made a mistake. On the other hand, alot of people think McGee & Booker looked great against the Knicks when Dray sucked so maybe its just Booker is a better fit with one of the others then Dray & McGee are together

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Booker is ballin out there....

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 9:44 PM | Report abuse

No Dray. Youve been getting alot of steals lately but you didnt need that. Flip definitely doesnt need to sit Dray with 4 fouls in the 3rd. What is that? Dray is carrying us on O right now and he sits him? He's stupid. Dray is like a plus 15 tonight and he benches him with 4 fouls in the 3rd? Come on

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:44 PM | Report abuse

dts,

You do know that you foul out with 6 fouls right?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Booker is a beast. Definitely needs to play more

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Practice free throw by Yi. Hell Yeah. Go for it. Take advantage of the loopholes.

LarryInClintonMD.

Posted by: LarryInClintonMD | January 28, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

smdtsu, if one of your big guns plays like 3min in the 1st half because of fouls and he gets 1 with 5min left in the 3rd, most coaches would leave him in. Its ok to have 4 in 3. You have to trust guys more. Then Dray doesnt even start the 4th and looks PO'd on the bench

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Hellacious pick on Shakur!

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Then Dray doesnt even start the 4th and looks PO'd on the bench. Hope he doesnt stink it up or look lazy when he gets back in. He's probably cold with no rythm now

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:01 PM | Report abuse

It was like 5 minutes left in the 3rd. That leaves him in with 4 fouls in 10 muntes played...and you want him to be available for the other 17 and only foul twice? With the other team already having like 30 free throws? Booker is playing fine and so is Yi. They're close...better to save him for the end.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Take Wall out the game and sit him for a couple of weeks. He looks like a gimp right now. Like that leg cant even hold up

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Man sit Dray down and put Yi back in.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 10:09 PM | Report abuse

dont settle Dray. You can get inside any time you want

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Booker can ball.

LarryInClintonMD.

Posted by: LarryInClintonMD | January 28, 2011 10:10 PM | Report abuse

The Wiz need to not settle for the outside shot, like the one Dray took early in the shot clock, especially in crunch time.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:11 PM | Report abuse

Its the 4th now Dray. You dont have to save fouls anymore. Flip has scared him into thinking that though.

Again though, Booker is a beast. Play him. Maybe even start him

These refs are killing us.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 10:21 PM | Report abuse

I think we've found our starting small forward of the future

Posted by: bbachrac | January 28, 2011 10:21 PM | Report abuse

Wall should've gotten that tip-out. Too much watching...

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Wall is killing us on both ends. Get the ball to Dray or NY. They have the mismatches. Stop giving the ball to Wall & Booker. What is Flip doing?

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:23 PM | Report abuse

They still can do this. Just take to the hoop strong with confidence just like Westbrook is doing. Put it back on them. Match the effort.

Posted by: LarryInClintonMD | January 28, 2011 10:24 PM | Report abuse

This is how a young team crumbles on the road.

SLum wall missed BOTH!!!!

Posted by: bbachrac | January 28, 2011 10:26 PM | Report abuse

I would prefer Shakur running the point right now.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Man its funny because lately weve had a few road games to win but every single game someone important just doesnt show up "at all"

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Well I think we all know by now that JWall is simply not clutch.

/hoping he hits a game winner.

Posted by: amorris525 | January 28, 2011 10:29 PM | Report abuse

The refs seem to want to give the game to OKC.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Wall has had ZERO confidence since his missed the layup in the third quarter. I don't know why Saunders has kept him in there!

Posted by: charley42 | January 28, 2011 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Man we suck at the end. No closer. Everyone panics

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:31 PM | Report abuse

Did Flip not draw up a play during that break in the action?

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:31 PM | Report abuse

I still think Flip is dumb. OKC is so small right now and Dray just muscled Green in the post. Go to Dray on the block. It will either be one on one with a inferior guy or they will double him and Dray has passed well tonight. Come on Flip

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:33 PM | Report abuse

Go for the victory...

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:34 PM | Report abuse

Durant is a great closer but Wall has been so bad that they might go at him with RW. I might would rather take Wall out right now. Hopefully he steps up for one last stop

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:35 PM | Report abuse

...I'll take that.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:36 PM | Report abuse

If only we had made one free throw no overtime

Posted by: bbachrac | January 28, 2011 10:37 PM | Report abuse

YES!!!!

OKC went into OT last game with all there big guns playing big minutes. Meanwhile Dray hasnt played much tongiht. He should have more left then anyone on the floor. Run the O through him until they can consistently stop it

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Westbrook is torching Wall.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:40 PM | Report abuse

WOW booker needed to go straight up w that. and wall has zero confidence he shoulda pulled the trigger no hesitation!

Posted by: bbachrac | January 28, 2011 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Wall, Young and Blatche - what about Booker???? He was hot earlier.

Posted by: charley42 | January 28, 2011 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 28, 2011 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Wall had no business shooting that shot he should have set NY up for a jumper or drove the lane to draw the foul, They have played well tonight and they have the last shot in OT

2nd overtime. The Bullets have got to know that this Team is overconfident. Get Them! Don't let them chump you.

did I call it or what? Flip's an idiot. Booker fouls out and he brings in Yi instead of Al when Booker was guarding Durant. Now what, we put guys like Lewis & Dray on Durant? Shouldve put Al on him. He's still more of a perimiter guy

John Wall looks like a boy playing against men out there. I think Dray is playing like he doesn't want to be here and Nick is playing like he is on the playground somewhere. Do the wizards run any kind of plays . It seems like whoever gets the ball first will shoot. Did anyone see how many open shots R Lewis missed? Damn !!!

@dlts,

You're an idiot. How's that! Yi or Thornton had nothing to do with this game. The Thunder are simply a better team at home and the Wiz played a great game. Just came up short. That's all.

Posted by: rphilli721 | January 28, 2011 11:11 PM | Report abuse

About the worst possible outcome as far as the rest of this trip is concerned. Gotta love the Wiz!

Posted by: rphilli721 | January 28, 2011 11:13 PM | Report abuse

Kevin Durant, Kevin Durant, Kevin Durant, made me think of Gilbert Arenas. Why does Wall not have the confidence?

You must have the belief and confidence that you can, THAT YOU CAN DO IT. They don't have it yet. It comes from leadership.

Flip is a good basketball coach, but my friends, my fellow bloggers, he isn't a good or above average leader.

That was a great game. The leadership in KD rose to the top. I wanted to see JW take over for the Bullets, but he didn't quite get there or realize that he had to match Westbrook even or one better.

Still this Team is not as far away as Samson and the Kalo's think.

Go Bullets.

One reason I believe Shakur didn't come in is because Flip doesn't have the nerve to make that move...also, until the Wiz can dedicate themselves to playing defense as a team nothing will get better...in either OT it was about getting stops and the team couldn't find a way...

rphilili721, youre an idiot. The Celtics & Jazz are better also but did we beat them? If NY's shot goes in at the buzzer, would we have won tonight? Shutup clown. You think the lesser team never wins. What are you watching the game for if you know that we're not going to win, idiot

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 11:31 PM | Report abuse

We have to remember that he's basically a year out of HS and now leading a horrible team going against guys at the toughest & deepest posistion in the league right now. It wasnt long ago that he was playing against 5'8 inferior HS scrubs and now he's playing guys like Williams, Rondo, Westbrook on back to back nights while also obviously being injuried. Its not easy.

We need to sit him for a couple of weeks for him to get healthy but Ive said it a million times. The system stinks and forces him to shoot all jumpers pretty much. Get Flip out and you will see Wall thrive with the right Offensive coach

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 28, 2011 11:32 PM | Report abuse

I like the wizard's team D tonight ,except wall every body was on his man.what is wrong with this kid,he was a defensive minded PG, are they telling him not to play D, he look like a 92 year old women on a waker.I hate the rotation flip is making.he allways pull players for mistake. He need to play every body a reasonable share. He refuse to give booker minutes when AB is wasting chances.Instade of moving RL to PF position to give a time to AB, he has to play Booker. RL and ALT as SF, AB and TB as Pf, JM and Yi at the center. He has to play 10-11 man rotation to keep every body fresh.

@dlts,

And what do previous victories have to do with this one? Nothing. Let alone your assertion that inserting Yi instead of Thornton after Booker fouled out was the reason we lost this game. We lost the game bc they made plays down the stretch and we didn't due to the fact that they have better players and are a better team. Those are facts kid!

You don't think that has ANYTHING with how teams play Wall? Seriously?

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 28, 2011 11:59 PM | Report abuse

@rphilli721,

I think dlts point is that bringing in Yi instead of Thornton created a significant matchup advantage for OKC. With Yi in the lineup, Blatche had to guard Durant as opposed to Thornton matching up with him.

Posted by: bazookajoe1 | January 29, 2011 12:15 AM | Report abuse

Not bad. Washington was the better club most of the evening. Finished with more FGs and threes, and lost at the FT line. You could see that problem coming at the half.

One impressive stat: Wall had 10 assists and no TOs. He's still not hitting his shots, but the team plays so much better when he's not turning the ball over. Takes pressure off the defense.

That was Wall's 32nd game, 27 starts. Last year he played a total of 38 games through March. He probably feels like his legs are falling off.

Anyway, wish they'd won. Then we could stop reading about how terrible it is that they haven't. Team wouldn't be any better, but the media might move on to something else for a week or so.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 29, 2011 12:16 AM | Report abuse

BTW, I thought OKC's weakness showed -- they don't have enough inside. Could create real problems for them in the playoffs. I heard they were negotiating with Cleveland for Varejao before he got hurt. That would have helped them a lot, I think.

Posted by: Samson151 | January 29, 2011 12:31 AM | Report abuse

I realized as Booker was singing along to "Don't stop believing" that he is now my favorite player on this team. He played a complete game offense AND defense. He always looks like he is trying so much harder than everyone else on the court aside from maybe Wall, who had a bad game but was still at least hustling. I like most of the other players but I really wouldn't be upset to lose any of these guys in a decent trade aside from Booker and Wall (maybe also Young if he can expand his game just a bit more and Seraphin if he can keep his shorts on straight).

Posted by: bosshog7169 | January 29, 2011 12:34 AM | Report abuse

The Wizards had the ball with 16 seconds left in regulation and NY takes a quick two for the tie. I thought the rule was to run the clock out, look for a three to win, and take a two if the three isn't there.

Blatche wasn't guarding Durant...Lewis was. They ran down screens to get him isolated at the top of the key...they ran it alot actually. Didn't matter as much when he wasn't hitting.

Lewis guarded him on like the 1st trip but then Dray got switched on him on nearly every trip after. Either way Thorton wouldve been the much better option

Got switched onto him....that's by deisgn. Would've been no different no matter who was in the game. It's not like Yi was on him.

Booker needs to play much more, so we know if tonight was for real. Note how the D disappeared the minute he "fouled out" (on 3 real fouls and 3 ref errors).

Nick is gaining confidence with every game, Thornton was great. I thought the Wiz looked pretty good overall. Folks, you can give up on Wall and Flip if you want, but this is what rebuilding looks like. Take it from a Mets fan who suffered through the early 80s and partied in '86.

Oh yeah, and dump the stupid booth review...that endless review of the easy OOB call sucked the Wiz' momentum. And there was no review afterward when Westbrook palmed the ball for an and 1.

Oh, tonight was for real. You just can't expect to see the same player another night. That's not the way rookies work.
