Open thread: Wizards (13-32) at Grizzlies (23-24)

By Michael Lee

Coming off their spirited double-overtime loss in Oklahoma City, the Wizards (13-32) will try to snap a 23-game losing streak this season on O.J. Mayo bobblehead night in Memphis, but there will be no Mayo after he was suspended 10 games for taking a banned substance. The Grizzlies won their first game on Friday without Mayo, defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 99-94 after coming back from a 16-point second-half deficit. The Wizards won the first game at FedEx Forum on Nov. 3, 2004, but they have lost the past five games in Memphis. Kirk Hinrich will return after missing the past four games with a hyperextended right elbow, but Mustafa Shakur is out after spraining his right ankle and injuring his right knee while absorbing a vicious pick from Oklahoma City reserve Nick Collison. JaVale McGee is also not with the team because of the flu.

Tipoff: 7 p.m.; TV: CSN; Radio: 106.7 FM.

Fatigue is a mother. Really don't expect the same energy as last night BUT . . .

I say do what we shouldve done late last game and thats ride Dray. Only problem is that he's got some really hard matchups on D this game and he's now sick also which means he will probably be the no energy sucky Dray tonight.

NY played a ton of minutes, scored alot of points, and hit some timely shots but he also had alot of bonehead selfish plays, was gunning way too much, looked like the old NY in spots, and shot very poorly. I mean this in a good way though because the flip side to him playing a ton is that he didnt shoot well so maybe this game he's due to shoot well.

The bad thing for us is that the Grizz are just 1 game under .500 so no way they overlook us. All there fans want this one bad so they can get to that mark and then start a serious playoff run

Y arent we using Dray more on O right now? He should be the freshest and he has the biggest mismatch. Iso Dray on the permiter with Gasol on him. Put him on one side and the rest of the team on the other side of the floor

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Dray looks sluggish & passive tonight. Has to be more aggressive and play with more energy

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Al is solid but just so dumb so many times that he hurts more then helps. He seems like he always comes up with key dumb plays that sting wether its a foul or something else.

Kirk always makes me mad stepping up for the free techs. Let NY shoot it. He's the best and it can get him going for a big game.

Dray's been passing so great lately but guys arent finishing for him

stop hating on my man Dray. Im not trading that cat for anyone. Wait until he gets that full offseason. His talent level is so clearly high that its sickening that our fans dont recognize it

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Im not a Dray hater. But I hate when he turns the ball over trying to be a point gaurd.

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 8:47 PM | Report abuse

Man, Thabeert looks like a guard out there tonight. Weird. He looks about 6'7 & skinny....lol Maybe its just me

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:47 PM | Report abuse

I hate Yi. For now on we should all refer to him as minus when we talk about him because thats just what he is. Like a big stiff alot of times. Everytime you start to get excited about him, he then looks like a scrub.

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:50 PM | Report abuse

NY has looked just like the old NY these past 2 games. Low IQ and has blinders on

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:54 PM | Report abuse

Im a Bullets/Wizards Luva! But this squad has too many soft players. Put Trevor "The Cook Book" Booker back in the game.

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I say it every single game. We give Dray the ball in the post on his weak hand? We even do that with McGee the few times we give it to him. I hate Flip's stupid system or play calls. It takes away so many options.

Sure you should do it at times but not 80% of the time like we do. We should do like 70%-30% on the left block so he can use his strong hand to finish & pass. On the right block he's basically gonna have to shoot a fade away every time and make a pass across his body. Flip is stupid

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Thats like 5 straight games where Dray's J has been suck. It looks like the injuried Arenas Dray, where he's putting nothing into it. He's just nonchalantly shooting it. You cant do that. You have to be in rythm and step into it

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 9:02 PM | Report abuse

The great thing for us is that we looked like a team that just played a ton of games lately, double OT yesterday, and have sick & injuried guys. We look every bit like that, yet we are still only down 5. If we can muster the energy then we can steal it. They are outhustling us badly, have all that stuff in there favor, and yet we are right there. Get that 2nd wind guys and we can pull it out. Believe!!!!!!...........lol

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Booker is D-ing Randolph up!

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:06 PM | Report abuse

Its so weird. Its like Wall only makes the J when he's force to shoot it because the clock is running down...lol

Im never a guy to cry about the refs but weve been getting jobbed in every single game lately. Horrible calls both ways for us and I do mean horrible. All the Grizz do is set moving picks and they call that garbage on Shard? Then they dont give NY the breakaway foul but then call a tic tac foul immediatly on us the other way. They must want us to get the #1 pick again

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 9:08 PM | Report abuse

I hate Flip so much. Final possesion and for once Flip gives the ball to NY instead of Wall like Ive been wanting. Grizz fould because they have a foul to give and sure enough we give it to Wall who turns it over. Why do we treat Wall like he's Gil? He always gets the last shot of the quarter or half despite being a horrible shooter. He never makes it.

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 9:12 PM | Report abuse

The Wiz never get calls home or away. It's like the ref's just believe that the Wiz are incapable of playing sound basketball.

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Having said that the Wizards are a horrible defensive team. If only we had hired Tom Thibodeau. If you remember he was on our staff for a hot minute until Eddie Jordan ran him away. He left only to take the Boston Celtics to the championship. Tom Thibodeau is now coaching the Chicago Bulls and look at them....

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:26 PM | Report abuse

lol, I looked like Whittman was trying to tell Wall how to do something right there or how something happened and Wall disagreed with him, which made Whittman just walk away

Thibodeau wouldn't have this team playing Celtics or Bulls defense...it's all about personnel...

That's why Blotche sucks amost 7 feet tall and can not get Randolph off of the block...wow

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:43 PM | Report abuse

I believe what Zach Randolph is doing to Dray is called. "eating his lunch"

That's why Blatche sucks almost 7 feet tall and can not get Randolph off of the block...wow!

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Matter of fact...Randolph looks like he's had very many lunches period.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 29, 2011 9:45 PM | Report abuse

The Wiz just can't play defense..

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:48 PM | Report abuse

our plays look so scrambled tonight. Alot of our own players are going the wrong way. 2 guys going to the same spot and so on. We just look more & more poorly coached as each game goes by

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 9:50 PM | Report abuse

BTW there is a lot of things the Wizards can't do...

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Wow...I forgot Andray was even in the game until that last bucket

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 29, 2011 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Im out of here this team flat out sucks!

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Yi can't get his tail out of here fast enough for me!

Posted by: jhmor3 | January 29, 2011 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Opposing team point guards just eat up Wall.

I think some of that is due to injury but he'll need to improve his defense over the years.

They're just going right by him. Or around him.

Whelp, its about time for me to go watch the big boxing match tonight between Bradley-Alexander. Atleast I have that to fall back on. Boxing is still my favorite sport. For those of you who arent boxing fans, you should check it out. Theyre 2 of the best and the winner could be a future oppoent for either Maywetather or Pac. Both guys are undefeated and have mad skill. Its on HBO in 7min. IDK if there is an undercard fight or not. Watch it online if you dont have HBO

Posted by: dlts2041 | January 29, 2011 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Just so we know...when Booker went to the bench with his third foul the Wiz fell apart.

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 9:55 PM | Report abuse

I don't know why everyone is surprised that they suck. Must've been those people that click 40 wins and the playoffs in that pre-season poll...

Young teams DO NOT win in the NBA off the bat. It just doesn't happen...we're a young team. It's going to be ugly.

They are what they are.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 29, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

I'm trying to hang in there with these guys but this is flat out frustrating. I can take the loses (to a degree), but not the lack of competing. The Wiz are not competing at all! They are not moving on offense or defense.

Posted by: jhmor3 | January 29, 2011 9:59 PM | Report abuse

The time I checked the Wizards basketball IQ is minuscule.

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Wow...that was a terrible call.

I'd like to see more of Booker and Hinrich on the court together...I like that defensive intensity.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 29, 2011 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Matter of fact some Hinrich, Young, Booker, Seraphin and Martin would be nice about now.

Posted by: SDMDTSU | January 29, 2011 10:07 PM | Report abuse

Booker definitely. He should be starting.

Posted by: jhmor3 | January 29, 2011 10:09 PM | Report abuse

Give me Young, Wall, Hinrich, Booker all other players except for 2pac can GYTOOH (Get Your Tail Out Out Of Here)!

Posted by: tseanw | January 29, 2011 10:16 PM | Report abuse

If Blatche could play half as tough as Zack Randolph the team would be much better...AB will always play like a small forward because he doesn't have the HEART to be tough consistently..

Charles Barkley was at least 3 inches shorter than AB and would treat AB as if he was a guard...toughness can't be taught...the sooner the Wiz start acquiring players who aren't afraid to get in the paint, the better they will become...

Posted by: pentagon40 | January 29, 2011 10:26 PM | Report abuse

Lousy team coming off a doubleOT game on the road...could hardly expect a win let alone high energy tonight

Posted by: divi3 | January 29, 2011 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Memphis was also on a b2b.
