Jump ball: What's in a name?

By Washington Post editors

This morning's blog post about a possible logo change for the Wizards reignited the old debate about the team's name. Changing the colors to red, white and blue apparently isn't enough for many readers. As usual, some are calling for a return to the Bullets, but owner Ted Leonsis appears to have ruled that out.

Commenter Godfather_of_Goals has another suggestion:

I still think "Generals" is the natural choice, since people still show up to to be entertained by the visiting team.

What do you think? Excluding the Bullets and the Generals, what would you name the team if you could?

The Washington Wraiths. Its not children friendly though but i don't see how bullets is more children friendly then wraiths.

The Washington Generals...uh...no. Generals don't wear red, white, and blue and think what our mascot would look like. Anyway, we need a name that would make our players proud to say. Remember that look John Wall had when he learned that the Wizards won the lottery? 'The Wizards' sound too fruity. It's like we own two WNBA teams. Having said that, it difficult (for me at least) to come up with a name for the Wiz.

Washington Punishers
Washington Justice
Washington Sharks

Ok I suck with names.

My personal favorite has always been The Washington Glory.

My next choice would be The Washington Capitols. You could have a logo making the "o" a basketball, have a general Go Caps slogan at VC for both teams. And this was actually an original NBA team.

After those two my next choice would probably be The Washington Rebels. Others worth consideration are The Washington Dukes (after Duke Ellington) and The Washington Grays.

Now Sea Dogs is catchy. But how that's related to DC? Did we find a sea dog in Potomac river or something?

Ted L. "appears to have ruled that [ie, changing the name back to "Bullets"] out"?????? - That's a huge leap, isn't it? Also, that would be breaking news. Ted has also acknowledged it as fans' number 1 concern and that it's under consideration. (Why are the "Wapo Editors" now making up statements??).

Also, this quoting of commenters is So Foolish. We've read it. Why rehash the dumb joke of some guy who never posts? Also, why are you telling us what names to exclude? Why don't you exclude this Jump Ball series?

Posted by: Urnesto | March 7, 2011 12:33 PM | Report abuse

A DC-centric defensive-minded team offers a couple choices:

Obstructionists
Filibusters

You could also go with:

DC Justice,
Auditors,
DC Law,
Lobbyists,
Revolving Doors,
Revolutionaries,
Bullets,
Humidity (contrast "the Heat"),
Cannibals (yeah, no specific relation to the city, but still a great team name)
Federals (claim the name from the USFL),
Loopholes,
Boehner's Tears,
Copperheads (native to the DC region and a snake with a poisonous bite)

To keep with the "W" alliteration theme:

Warmongers
War Dept
Werewolves
Wyvern (a fire-breathing dragon from medieval lore, which would have about as much connection to the city as Wizardry).

Posted by: JPRS | March 7, 2011 12:45 PM | Report abuse

I always liked Washington Monuments, but that does sort of bring to mind a bunch of stone footed tall guys lumbering around. It would have been a good match in the beef brothers days or even with Ellison, Sampson, Bol, Muresan.

maybe Booker, Mcgee and Seraphin could someday be worthy of a moniker like that.

We're the capital of the free world, supposedly, so my suggestion:

The Washington Power

Posted by: jeff515 | March 7, 2011 12:51 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to second demonj21.

Washington Stars is one that I have had in mind, too. Sure, it's not super flashy, but it fits with 50 stars on the flag and stars featured on virtually every government office building.

Stripes could be another. Although, I'm afraid that might conjure images of prison uniforms, or something. So make the mascot's name "Stripes" instead of G-Wiz or the imaginative Hoops.

Posted by: JasonM1 | March 7, 2011 12:54 PM | Report abuse

Mainly three ways to go on this:

Straight alliteration (Wizards being the quintissential alliteration without real meaning name)

the Nation's Capital (All of the names like Justice or Federals or Executives)

or a more local DC tack (Copperheads, Swamp Fillers, Bad Drivers being examples)

Monuments and Capitols kind of fits between the local (the physical buildings) and the national (what those buildings represent)

Those are my first two choices.

Posted by: Blurred | March 7, 2011 12:57 PM | Report abuse

And One (because it is all about me with this team)
Bunker Busters
Bricklayers
Blue Plains Boys
Commodes
Energy Stars
Tea Baggers
Liberators
Deciders

Or we could totally sell out and go with
Phone Operators
Pollmen
Team Fios
Can you here me now?

Double down on "Bullets" but with something too high-caliber for it to be an Un-PC reminder of local street thugs. Something with some real throw weight:

The Washington Tomahawks

(as in the missiles, not the scalping implements, but it does give you a nice tie-in with the Redskins.)

A number of these team names have been used already: Stars, Federals, Commandos, Glory, Freedom, and Power (can we get Kingdom already???).

Let's go British, and celebrate the team's heritage in Baltimore and in Landover, as well as Chinatown.

Washington Wanderers.

Yep, you heard it here first.

Washington Dragons

Maybe too many syllables but what about:
Stars & Stripes
Old Glory

Posted by: DoubleEagle1 | March 7, 2011 1:15 PM | Report abuse

The Washington Dragons. No alliteration, but it fits in well with the Chinatown location and it has really cool logo possibilities, much better than the lame logo that they have now (which, by the way, would look even worse in red, white and blue).

Posted by: rufus_t_firefly | March 7, 2011 1:28 PM | Report abuse

The only thing worse than the name Washington Wizards is the absolutely awful string of names people come up with to describe how bad the team is. The Wizards name stinks, the team stinks, and your sense of humor stinks. We get it. It's not funny. And conspiracy theories and political commentary aside, Ted has said we're not going back to the Bullets. It's his money, he makes the rules. Deal with it.

Teams changing names sets a bad precedent. I don't want teams in all four sports changing names each time they change owners or go through a rebuilding process. Although it's a drag to be stuck with the Wizards, we should just stick with it. It has possibilities.

The first order of business should be to fire absolutely anyone who had anything to do with marketing this team or its image over the last ten years. That decade saw the meteoric rise in popularity of the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and World of Warcraft, arguably the only period in history in which wizards will ever be considered cool, and our logo was STILL lame.

Why we should name them the Bureaucrats:

WaPo Dec 18, 2013: "The Lakers jumped out to an early 18 point lead and appeared to be cruising to an easy win. As the game wore on, however, the Crats worked the refs for ticky-tack fouls and questionable turnover calls. By late in the fourth, two Lakers had already been disqualified for flagrant fouls and an assistant coach was committed to a psychiatric ward. Finally the LA team walked off the floor and the Crats were awarded the victory by forfeit."

Washington Deficits

Sad isn’t. The best that this organization can come up is a logo/ name change. It doesn’t matter what name they have, they could be called the Losers, because that’s just what they are. Start with management, a vision for the future that includes commitment to the players and fans. Spend the money, get some good coaching and build a team with players that have the right attitude. The rest of this is just marketing BS.

Posted by: wheresthemoney | March 7, 2011 1:59 PM | Report abuse

The hockey team already has the best nickname possible for a Washington team. And, naming the basketball team CapitOls is not going to happen.

I have no idea where Wizards came from, but it's god awful. I would switch back to Bullets and update the uniform ala the Capitals to make it more modern yet maintain the feel of the original.

Otherwise, as for new suggestions, I like Glory hands down.

How about we drop the whole Washington tag, and the associated stigma, and call 'em the Capital Chill?

And enough we all the bellyaching! This team will bounce back. Have faith!

Posted by: LJP2 | March 7, 2011 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Any decent replacement name for Wizards. It was a lame, bad name from the very beginning, and still a mystery how such an awful P.R. disaster was chosen. "Wizards" is completely Euro-centric, and its worst connotation is a Ku Klux Klan member wearing a pointed hood. The leader of the Klan was called the "Grand Wizard," afterall. So I'm not in the right frame of mind whenever I look at a pointy-hat wearing mascot. There's no good mascot you can choose with Wizards. C'mon, Ted, it's your team, make it right.

Federals is fine. So is Senators. "Generals" is the best, but if the reason not to use it is the war-like reference, then the current "Wizards" is a million times worse, if you're worried about implications.

Posted by: dpclark | March 7, 2011 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Well, if you guys want a name that ties to Washington DC basketball past, then you might want to consider "Capitols" or "Caps". Those were the names of earlier basketball franchises before the Bullets moved into town (and actually kicked the the Caps out of town). What happen to the "Caps", they moved to Virginia and became the Virginia Squires. Julius Erving was drafted by them.
Notice on the spelling...it's not Capitals like the hockey team, it's Capitols.

So my suggestions other than Bullets....
Washington Capitols (not Capitals)
Washington Ballers

But I still want Bullets name back. The old school unis with the three red stripes is nice. We just need to change/modernize the old Bullets logo.

Yes for heaven's sake don't name them the Bullets, because the politically correct anti-Second Amendment loonies might get offended. And certainly, bball team names contribute to the DC murder rate.

The Pollin family were and still are notorious anti-Second Amendment activists, so their changing the team name rings a little hollow. They just don't like guns, or more accurately, Americans' right to bear arms. Let's not pretend the name change was about anything else.

Seriously, why do people keep saying that Ted said we're not going back to Bullets, when Ted hasn't ever actually said that??? The name change back to Bullets is "under consideration," which is way different than "no."

Also, the reason for not doing the Washington Generals (to the poster above) is that is the name of the team that lost 10,000 consecutive times to the Harlem Globetrotters -- not because of war.

Also, Glory is soooo WBNA. We need an "s" at the end.

I second Washington Power. Sounds cool and easy marketing. This city is known for power as much as, or more than, anything else. Also, it's a bold name, and we are in seriuos need of boldness around here.

Naming the team "Glory" will give road crowds too much fodder.

Feds could work, but then two of the three franchises in town would have depressingly boring names.

If we're ditching Wizards, then knights or any other medieval has to go as well.

I haven't seen one alliterative example that works - most "W" options are too much of a stretch.

Capitals or Captiols. Not gonna happen.

Stars. Meh. Sounds about as menacing as a wizard. Good for kids 5 and under, bad for looking/sounding tough. Not to mention the uni's. Our guys all covered in shiny stars just sounds like awful 80s/90s expansion garbage to me (and didn't the Sixers have some stars in their previous design?).

And if we're going retro... we must go BULLETS and end this nonsense.

Let's just continue with the name Wizards and leave it at that.

Posted by: thecomedian1 | March 7, 2011 4:14 PM | Report abuse

And, for the record, anyone who thinks that changing the name from Bullets to Wizards was all about some kind of PC gun violence protest has O.D.ed on the Kool-aid.

While that aspect may have played some part of it (and played well in the P.R. arena) the primary reason the name was changed was the same primary reason anyone does anything: money. By the time MCI (now Verizon) Center was set to open, the name Bullets had so long been synonymous with NBA mediocrity that not only could they not sell tickets, they couldn't sell merchandise (which is where the real money was). With the new Arena set to open, Abe and Co. decided to take advantage of the opportunity to rebrand the franchise from the ground up, breaking ties with the old name, which had basically come to symbolize futility and failure.

And while an argument could be made that the current name symbolizes much the same thing: (A) the Wizards have had more success in more recent years than the Bullets did at the time of the last name change and (B) changing the name last time didn't have any meaningful turnaround effect on the team's fortunes, so what would be the point now?

Posted by: kalo_rama | March 7, 2011 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Didn't Abe open up the name to a public contest and he did no pick the name the public preferred?

I like the Bullets and the old logo and stuff because that was my era. That does not really matter to me. the reality is the wizard stuff is ugly!!!! the 1960's orange bullets jersey and the red white and blue stuff blow all the Wiz stuff away.

Bullets or bust! If they can wear Bullets throw-backs, then why can't they resurrect the proper team name for good? Addendum: I just read the posts about needing an "s" at the end or else we sound like a WNBA team. Pretty hard to argue with that reasoning.

In that case: Federals, Monuments, Dukes, or Cannons.

Posted by: Peakfest | March 7, 2011 4:25 PM | Report abuse

Abe Pollin said that there was "voting" on the names -- but the problem with the vote was (1) a pre-selected slate of names (that no one really liked anyway) and (2) Pollin never announced the numerical results of the vote. He just announced that the new name would be Wizards. The whole thing was fixed, imo.

Great post. Though I am not so sure about Washington Power. Let us all imagine sitting in the MCI Center and Boom! Lights goes out as they get ready to introduce the our team. First we need a macot - none of the federal names are going to rile up the crowd or make our players feel like kicking asses. So imagine in this game we play the Bulls... Virtue video play on the big screen...Bulls running on DC streets to attack them MCI. As they get near, our Dragon (Blue skin/ red eyes/ white thin stripes) stand on top of the monument, it roar with fire then fly down to the MCI Center then blast away all the bulls -- BOOM! we get fire in the area all over the place and then you hear ' GET READY FOR OUR WASHINGTON DDDRRAAAGGGOONNNSSSS!!!!' . crowd goes wild! Hey, what mascot you know in the NBA can outdo a Dragon?

If you are more than 50 yrs old there is only one answer: BULLETS.........changing the name to Wizards did not seem to change the amount of violence w/ a gun in DC as our deceased owner had hoped. I am 70 yrs old & they will always be the Washington Bullets as they were when they won their championships. BULLETS FOREVER

Can't use Freedom...that was the name of the recently semi-departed women’s soccer team. Can't use Power...that was the name of the long-ago departed indoor lacrosse team. Generals would work as a name, get them camouflage uniforms and then they would have a solid excuse for disappearing on the court for long stretches of the game.
Best would be Bullets for obvious reasons...after that “Red Tapes” would be my choice.

I still say change it back to Bullets. The change to Wizards was unnecessary. I'm surprised there are ppl defending to keep it. That's how alot us feel when it was changed from the Bullets. Think of the Lakers...do you know why they are named the Lakers? Do you know were they moved from? You think LA has alot of lakes? So, why didn't they think change the name to something related to LA?

Posted by: bdbyptr | March 7, 2011 4:58 PM | Report abuse

If not Bullets, it should be The Washington Capitols.

It was the name of DC's original NBA team (coached by Red Aurebach) giving it historical value. It goes with the red, white & blue colors. It fits with the "Go Caps" theme of verizon center. The name is tailor made to make the "o" a basketball. And it just sounds good & legit, not some cartoon character. Out of everything mentioned it just seems the most sensible.

Posted by: Darnell1 | March 7, 2011 5:08 PM | Report abuse

It should have never been changed, the franchise was so reactionary concerning the violence in the city at that time, and Abe Pollin thought he was doing the right thing it should go back to the Bullets.

I've never understood all the anti-Wizards sentiment. Not that I think the Wizards is a great name or anything, but neither is Bullets. Neither name has any real connection to the area. People just prefer Bullets because it was the original name. There's nothing inherently good about it. I like the idea of changing the unis and colors, if for no other reason than to fix the side panels. Why do they only have the panels on one side of the uniform? It looks cheap. Its a small thing I know, but it irks me.

That irony has amused me since the day the name change was announced.

I really think the only two choices are Bullets and Wizards. A 3rd team name in a relatively short history is no way to build a foundation for a franchise. If Cleveland can stick with a stupid name like the Browns, Miami can accept the Dolphins, and New York can live with some ridiculous Knickerbocker nonsense, we can live with the Bullets or the Wizards.

Preferably the Bullets.

Posted by: CommieX | March 7, 2011 5:20 PM | Report abuse

And while an argument could be made that the current name symbolizes much the same thing: (A) the Wizards have had more success in more recent years than the Bullets did at the time of the last name change and (B) changing the name last time didn't have any meaningful turnaround effect on the team's fortunes, so what would be the point now?

I would name them the same thing the Redskins should have been renamed to....

The Washington Braves.

Instead of stubbornly sticking to the un-"honorific" term Redskin, the team should have gone back to it's former name from it's Boston roots-the Braves. Nothing would have to change image wise, merchandise wise, or history wise, after all, the name is "new-old". Plus, Braves is a term already used in the team fight song.

The Bullets should seize upon the opportunity and call themselves the Bulle- er, Braves....

Other than that, BULLETS is the best choice....period.

Posted by: ArmchairGM | March 7, 2011 5:48 PM | Report abuse

The name obviously has nothing to do with winning or losing so it's stupid to even make that point. Wizards is just a forgetable name and the Bullets or something other than the Wizards would be better.

Posted by: Wizbullets88 | March 7, 2011 5:49 PM | Report abuse

Plus, Washington Braves rolls off the tongue nicely...better than Washington Sea Dogs, Generals, Senators(corny as hell) and Capitols(also corny, if lovably so).

Washington Braves....Washington Capitols
Washington Braves....Washington Sea-Dogs
Washington Braves....Washington Generals
Washington Braves....Washington Senators
Washington Braves....Washington Wizards

Sounds better than all of them.

I know the posting said list names excluding Bullets and Generals... but i have to say it.

Washington Generals is the best name. Use the DC Flag as the new team logo as a play on both the stars on a Generals Uniform and the DC Flag. Washington Generals is the way to go.

"the Wizards have had more success in more recent years than the Bullets did at the time of the last name change"

The Washington Bullets of old had more success before the name change to the Wizards.
When the team was known as the Bullets in the 70s, they went to the NBA Finals four times and won once....Right before they changed their name, they went to the playoffs and couldn't get past....(drumroll)...the Jordan led Chicago Bulls.

During that time, we had Juwan, Webber, Rod...and I think we just drafted Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace. That to me would of been a beast of a team if we were able to keep them all.

Ok so here is what happened and this is the truth. Abe got all PC and liberal and decided to chage the name to something less gun related, AND he saw a chance to make som dough as the Bullets logo's we old and boring and "The Souz" (remember her?) wanted it for marketing. Soooo

They made a contest out of it with the top 5 names being put out there for another vote. Though the results were not published this is what happened. The top vote getter by over 60% was, yup, leave it alone as the Bullets. Then there were 4 dumb names that nobody liked, especially not young hip black guys. One name that was on the list but not near the top was Wizards, and Chris Webber and Juwan Howard loved it. So they put Wizards in place of Bullets, released the list and then when Wizards finished 4th, the new latest fab 2 that were here to save the franchise chose the new name. Send your hate mail to Chris Webber and Juwan Howard because Abe isn't taking any mail these days and The Souz is laughing all the way to the bank.

Yep, it almost feels like Deja Vu. We draft and trade for a young core of players and add in some veterans. We make a run and then after a couple of years...it falls apart. So, that's when we start blowing up the team.

So, some more information about the Washington Capitols. They were a charter member of the NBA. They had a winning percentage in their first year of .817 which may still be the record. And they had the first African-American player in the NBA.

One more thing. I'm over 50 so I remember the Bullets as the Baltimore Bullets. It would be nice to give the team a name that truly has a DC legacy. Similar to what our baseball team has done.

Although I'm in the camp that doesn't really feel strongly about what the name is or isn't, I rather like the idea of a "non-s-at the-end" name (e.g., Heat, Magic). Posted by: bdbyptr | March 7, 2011 6:19 PM

As always, it's a good idea to read the whole thing before responding.

They changed the name of the team in 1997. At that time, The Bullets had been to the playoffs once in the previous 9 years (the season just prior to the name change) and hadn't actually won a playoff series in 15 years. By contrast, the Wizards have been to the playoffs 4 times in the last 7 years and won one series. So, again, the Wizards have had more success in recent years than the Bullets had in the same period of time prior to the name change. The fact that they won a title almost 20 years before the name change does nothing to refute that.

Posted by: kalo_rama | March 7, 2011 9:28 PM | Report abuse

swishjobs, I really like one you came up with, The Washington Gnats! Has a nice ring to it.

But after reading through all of the responses, I am now leaning to The Capitols as my preference. It stands up, it sounds good, and I like the historical significance. You're entitled. My point was just that Beasley -- who you seemed to discount -- actually more than offsets Nick's offensive production. And Darko offsets what the Wiz get from McGee. And the Wolves have a respectable veteran PG, all they need with a good passing front line. They're not relying primarily on assists anyway.

So head to head, I'd say the Wolves are bigger underachievers than Washington.
